Ask HN: Hacker News for Non-Software Engineers

Ask HN: Hacker News for Non-Software Engineers 5 by elil17 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! While I love the culture and many of the articles, HN is not as relevant as I wish it was to my day-to-day job and interests. As a mechanical engineer/engineering generalist, I wish there was a version of HN that focused more on every type of engineering that's not software engineering. I wish I could find the blog posts about how to get the most out of a factory visit, the journal articles about new materials, and the latest startups that hire people with my skillset. I'm not looking for Q&A or help forums (there are lots of good ones for that).

Ask HN: Networking with Hackers in a Small Town

Ask HN: Networking with Hackers in a Small Town 2 by imoreno | 1 comments on Hacker News. I recently moved to a small town in the US. It seems to have a decent number of people in the software iondustry (I did a LinkedIn search for my city and "Industry: Software development" and got a few hundred) but it's no tech hub like the Bay Area or NYC. I work remotely so I'd like to network with people in my area, to build professional relationships, maybe make friends and collaborate on some personal projects (I enjoy working with people much more than on my own) and just generally be more involved in my local community. Maybe organize some kind of tech meetup (currently, meetups.com shows none in my area, although perhaps there's some that are not advertised there). How should I go about doing this? Any tips for figuring out who would have common interests before I reach out, or is it just a matter of trying everyone and seeing who bites? If anyone has been in a simila...

Ask HN: Have you set up a procedure to disclose you passwords in case of death?

Ask HN: Have you set up a procedure to disclose you passwords in case of death? 13 by bsjaux628 | 10 comments on Hacker News. After coming back from my home country where the insecurity is a big part of the daily life (armed robbery, kidnapping, murder), I started thinking of what would happen if something happened to me and how would I be able to ease the burden on my love ones to manage my digital assets (cancel subscriptions, keep my digital libraries, etc). So I ask: do you have a procedure in place to grant or transfer access in case of death? My first idea would be using a password manager for everything, list every device used for 2SA and confine within my will a master password.

Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal

Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal 8 by DicIfTEx | 2 comments on Hacker News. I don't usually go in for conspiracy theories, but this one seems pretty clear-cut and I can't see anyone else discussing it online: WhatsApp appears to be selectively censoring references to Signal. Specifically, I had changed my profile picture on WhatsApp to the Signal logo and my ‘About’ text to ‘Message me on Signal - https://signal.org/download/’. However, I noticed recently (after someone happened to open their WhatsApp in front of me and I saw their chat with me) that my WhatsApp contacts are seeing my profile picture and my ‘About’ text as blank. I've checked and this seems to be the case for all of my WhatsApp contacts. See screenshots from me and my friend's phones here: https://ift.tt/abnl3V1 On the bright side, this serves as an ideal demo for convincing anyone who doesn't understand why I am trying to migrate them over to Signal. So, I guess, than...

Tell HN: ProtonMail enabled setting to autoshow embedded/remote images

This feature set is a little complex, so I may be getting the sequence of events a little wrong. As of sometime in roughly the last day: - the ProtonMail web app will automatically show you embedded and remote image content in HTML messages. (New behavior.) - "Trackers" will be removed, and presumably not processed at all. (Existing behavior.) - ProtonMail will proxy the remote content for you. (Existing behavior.) The settings to do so are: - Messages and Composing -- Auto show embedded images (automatically enabled with this change) - Email Privacy -- Auto show remote images (automatically enabled with this change) -- Block email tracking (I had this enabled already but they probably also automatically enabled it.) These settings are present in the beta and regular channels for the web app. I somehow had beta channel enabled, so I'm not sure if these settings would have been automatically enabled for non-beta users. This is the (now incorrect) documentation fo...

Does anyone know some academic/ research journals that they're willing to share? Even if the article is just about generative algorithms in general that's a great help. Thank you in advance.

Ask HN: How to file your own patents?

Ask HN: How to file your own patents? 3 by empty_array | 3 comments on Hacker News. Looking for good comprehensive resources or maybe even a good course (paid or free) to learn how to file good patents. I am looking for quality training that does not require a full law degree to be able to write reasonably good patents. I have a few I would like to file and the cost of doing it through an attorney is prohibitive. My only option is to learn to do it myself. Our patent system isn't designed to be equitable at all. The power is entirely in the hands of those with tons of money, be it corporations or individuals. In the past couple of decades I have missed out on filing patents for inventions that, as recently as yesterday, I discovered large corporations implemented ten years after I came-up with the solution. My new startup is based on new technology. I need to stop this cycle of working my ass off to develop innovations only to have no protections whatsoever from the well-financed....

[$] An ordered set for Python? [$] An ordered set for Python?

Python has lots of different options for mutable data structures, both directly in the language and in the standard library. Lists, dictionaries (or "dicts"), and sets are the foundation, but two of those maintain an order based on how the elements are added, while sets do not. A recent discussion on the Python Discourse forum raised the idea of adding an ordered variant of sets; while it does not look like there is a big push to add the feature, the discussion did show some of what is generally needed to get new things into the language—and could well lead to its inclusion. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/QRUWkHT via IFTTT

Poettering: Brave new trusted boot world Poettering: Brave new trusted boot world

Lennart Poettering has posted a detailed specification for a new approach to "trusted computing" systems. Central to the proposed design is the concept of a Unified Kernel Image (UKI) . These UKIs are the combination of a Linux kernel image, and initrd, a UEFI boot stub program (and further resources, see below) into one single UEFI PE file that can either be directly invoked by the UEFI firmware (which is useful in particular in some cloud/Confidential Computing environments) or through a boot loader (which is generally useful to implement support for multiple kernel versions, with interactive or automatic selection of image to boot into, potentially with automatic fallback management to increase robustness). This work is evidently the first in a series that will come out of the newly formed Linux Userspace API Group . from LWN.net https://ift.tt/fbjQi04 via IFTTT

Would you take a research job at a UARC? 2 by ipunchghosts | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have a PhD and was offered a position as a researcher at a UARC in the United States. UARCs are university affiliated research centers setup by the US DoD to act as a liaison between DoD and academia. However, after interviewing and speaking with a few employees of a competing UARC, these places seem like research dead-ends mostly acting like a glorified defense contractor. I would like to do research and publish. HR tells me this is a great place to do these thing but when I check IEEE and Google scholar, i cant find any publications of authors from this institution. Plus, the interviews made it seem like the work is mostly doing data analysis or writing software. Nothing there lead me to believe I would be doing research day in and day out. Does anyone on HN work for a UARC? Do you like it? How much research do you do?

P.s.: I'm not looking for a remote vs. in-person debate. Many, many threads here have gone over the pros and cons, it's getting tiresome, and I know which is right for me.

Ask HN: Options for back end engineer sick of oncall

Ask HN: Options for back end engineer sick of oncall 5 by lknfrnpt | 6 comments on Hacker News. Hi folks, I'm close to hitting a decade of full time experience. In that time, I have always worked in back end engineering roles requiring oncall duties. I've recently identified a few things that are my key stressors at work, and the key contributors to my burn out. The top of that list is the existence of oncall duties, and the need to be ready to respond for a week at a time. Even with a quiet oncall, I still plan my personal life around being oncall. Same goes for planning any tie off. I've reached a point where I don't need or want to self sacrifice (e.g,. for total comp, or prestige, or whatever); instead, I'm trying to tweak my path forward for the next decade or so of work. I'm not ruling out a change of disciplines, for instance mobile or frontend development. That said, I have a strong set of skills and deep experience from the last decade. So I'm wond...

Ask HN: Tools for managing job interviews?

Ask HN: Tools for managing job interviews? 3 by throwawae1 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm familiar with "Applicant Tracking System (ATS)" software like Greenhouse for the hiring side, but I've never heard of software for managing the interviewing side. As a software engineer somewhere between casually and actively interviewing, I've quickly become overwhelmed in managing leads, emails, scheduling, and documenting discovery for each opportunity. I built out what I thought to be a sophisticated system in Notion (complete with a database, todos, and document templates), but it hasn't scaled as well as I thought it would. Anyone know of any tools out there for managing job interviews and opportunities for tech workers?

Ask HN: How to ease in Git to someone with Git PTSD 2 by lastdong | 0 comments on Hacker News. I came across some colleagues who can’t stand Git (even the slightest whisper). Alternatively, Perforce is used extensively in the gaming industry, really good integration with Unreal Engine. Yesterday, I finally understood why: in their previous team, someone who didn’t understand Git at all, brought it in, and they ended up commiting directly to master and using spreadsheets to track who was editing what (no gitflow, no PRs) - just baffling, of course it didn’t went well, and of course they hate it. How do I get them to trust the Git system again is an interesting challenge, but Perforce works, and basically wanted to share this amazing story.

Ask HN: Are there any undocumented ISA extensions used in Linux systems? 3 by ladyanita22 | 1 comments on Hacker News. If someone were to build a Linux system with proprietary, private (undocumented) ISA extensions, how would they do it given Linux is open source? Are there any examples of this being done? Would it be possible at all? I got inspiration from this (https://ift.tt/Bxh9iWc) and I wondered if someone has done it before on a Linux-based system. I understand a userspace library could be created to access those instructions from userspace, but how would then they be implemented in the kernel? Through a proprietary kernel module built using a custom compiler? Or is that not needed at all and the library could just run on the processor taking advantage of the proprietary extensions?

Converting Postman to YAML to Call API-Using Fluvio

Converting Postman to YAML to Call API-Using Fluvio 2 by akerj | 0 comments on Hacker News. I was wondering how to properly format the following keys and values into the YAML document so that I can connect to Fluvio's managing connector. I was able to use Postman to get HTTP responses from Indeed API using POST Request URL, Indeed API Key, Request Payload (converted JSON format to YAML), and two parameters (co and locale). The Request Payload also put other key values automatically into the YAML. So far I have been using the following format for YAML but I keep getting Running Status Failed for the connector. How should the YAML be formatted with these keys and values so that I can use the connector? Neograd – A deep learning framework created from scratch using Python and NumPy 2 by pranftw | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey everyone! I released v0.0.2 of neograd, a deep learning framework created from scratch using Python and NumPy, with automatic differentiation capabilities. I’d taken for granted that I understood how convolutions work. Just implement a sliding window, perform element-wise multiplication, take its sum, sounds so simple right? Add to that - accounting for the running time of the algorithm, backward pass to get its gradients and convolutions over volumes, this turned out to be an excruciating undertaking. This release includes: - Gradient checking to check the correctness of gradients that are calculated by autograd - Optimization algorithms like Momentum, RMSProp, and Adam - 2D, 3D Convolution and 2D, 3D Pooling layers for Convolutional Neural Networks - Save trained models, weights to disk and load them whenever required - Add checkpoints while training the mode...

Ask HN: Is it possible to create a image processing based lie detector?

Ask HN: Is it possible to create a image processing based lie detector? 2 by sumitviii | 6 comments on Hacker News. Hello, Seeing how most people who guess well if someone is lying do it from 'reading a face', it can be said that there must be auditory and visual cues in a person's expressions that reveal if someone is lying. Is it possible to create a lie detector just based on reading and processing someone's facial expressions and voice? This can have a lot of uses. Courts can know if a defendant is guilty or innocent immediately in almost all cases. Businesses can know if their suppliers and employees are capable. Employees can know if the employer will actually give them the raise that they have been promising. We may all be able to know if our dear politicians are lying. This will improve our lives and it seems like a marketable product. Why hasn't anyone made it so far.

Ask HN: Why are crypto companies and EA writer-hungry? 4 by WritingWriter | 3 comments on Hacker News. This might be a weird question; it's coming from a person who is pretty non-technical compared to the average HN user. I write for a living, and good-paying writing jobs are difficult to come by, so I tend to maintain a constant search even when I have work. I've noticed that - in the tech/startup world - Crypto companies and EA-related orgs are sometimes-to-often offering OK writer jobs, while tech companies at large tend to do so much more rarely. I should note I don't mean technical writing so much; I'm more talking about outward-facing writing that seeks to communicate information to outside parties, like PR/Marketing/Employer Prop. Tech companies often hire technical writers, but that's distinct from what I do/mean. It seems to me that it should be the case that these companies would have similar needs to each other - what am I missing?

Ask HN: Is it still possible to live in a terminal?

In college I did a month long experiment where I only used my computer's terminal emulator to do all my work. I wrote my code/notes in Vim, browsed the web with elinks, and wrote my emails using mutt. It was a great learning experience. Recently I looked into doing this again and ran into a bunch of issues: - My company uses Slack's enterprise auth, and all the CLI slack clients I could find haven't been updated in years and no longer work. - The web is using more javascript than in the past. - Mutt doesn't handle multiple email accounts natively for work/personal. The solutions are hacks at best. Email servers are starting to use more complete auth mechanisms that don't work well with mutt. It seems like the terminal world is slowly getting abandoned in favor of proprietary GUI apps. Anyone still living inside the terminal? Links to tools for Slack are appreciated. Ask HN: My employer has about two months of runway left. What shoud I do now? 8 by FinalBriefing | 6 comments on Hacker News. I'm a frontend developer working at a small company. The company has only a few months of funding left. After that, the product I'm working on may go into a "maintenance mode" with a skeleton crew (best case scenario). There is still a (slim) chance that the company will be purchased, but those talks have been going on for several months, and not much has come from it. What should I be doing now to prepare, both for myself and whatever happens to the company once I'm gone? I have been selectively applying to jobs, but I'm not 100% ready to leave yet. It's a nice job with little stress (aside from, you know, the company folding...). On one hand, it would be nice to ride out the next few months, then start applying to jobs once I'm on unemployment (never been on unemployment before, but I've got enough saving to last a while)...

Ask HN: If Signal goes through with removing SMS, what app should replace it? 3 by thebetatester | 2 comments on Hacker News. It seems like an ill-advised move to remove SMS support from Signal (as shown by the multitude of comments on the discussion of the post elsewhere on HN). One of the reasons I like Signal is it isn't Google Messages, as in it's one extra step for Google to peek at the messages I'm sending (using Android itself notwithstanding). I felt I could trust Signal not to be actively undermining my privacy and monetizing/cataloging my communications. What trusted app would you recommend for SMS communication if Signal does in fact remove that feature?

I've worked in startups for years leading in various capacities in and around product, but have not yet learned the "ropes" of product management, which is what I'd like to hone in on. I'm looking for a PM coach to help me speed run the entire product management role, from strategy, roadmapping, managing stakeholders, dev cycles, etc etc. Where can I find one?

Ask HN: Are we all burned out?

I feel burned out and every one of my friends and coworkers I have talked to are feeling burned out. Having a kid, covid , war in Ukraine and now recession and layoffs have left me fatigued and I can barely learn anything new or look forward to anything . All I want to do is look at my phone and consume more content. And I look back fondly to 2001-2007 and also 2010-2017. Do I need therapy or is everyone feeling the same ? [$] (Re)moving outdated Python tools and scripts [$] (Re)moving outdated Python tools and scripts

At the end of September, Victor Stinner reported on a security bug fix he had been working on for a script from the CPython Tools/scripts directory. As part of that work, he realized that there were 74 scripts in that directory that were potentially outdated, unused, unmaintained, trivial, buggy, or some combination of all of those. It is not uncommon for projects to have code that accretes in overlooked corners of the source tree, but it makes sense to periodically take a look to see if changes are needed. Stinner seems to have kicked that off for Python with his message. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/xf1PVRt via IFTTT

Ask HN: How to stand out while searching for an internship

Ask HN: How to stand out while searching for an internship 3 by jeeep | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi, I'm currently looking for an internship as the last step before getting my diploma and I was wondering what could make me stand out from other applicants. I'm taking the traditional route with LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed, etc, but I feel like my resume doesn't even reach a real person and I had no luck so far. Are there ways to connect with employers in a more productive and different way? If someone could share their experience I would really appreciate it. Thanks (I'm in software development)

Tell HN: VPN Situation in Iran

Tell HN: VPN Situation in Iran 4 by amir734jj | 3 comments on Hacker News. I am an Iranian and have a family member in Iran. As you now the internet is currently shut off from outside or very slow. Over the past years, I would create a OpenVPN server with a port other than default OpenVPN port (1194) and share the connection with my family member in Iran. Using a random port was needed because default OpenVPN is blocked in Iran for sometime (probably since 2010). But recently [after the recent internet shutdown] I notice a change. My family member cannot even connect to a server IP address or (private) domain using any port so VPN doesn't work anymore. Instead they are only able to connect to the outside world using locally paid VPNs but applications that have end-to-end encryption doesn't work anymore with these VPNs (Telegram, WhatsApp and etc). So my theory is they cut off the connection to outside and people are only able to connect with outside world using certain VPNs th...

Ask HN: Does a Civilisation OS Exist?

Ask HN: Does a Civilisation OS Exist? 2 by jamiegreen | 1 comments on Hacker News. The threat of nuclear war seems to be rising rapidly: https://ift.tt/YqZEAn2 https://ift.tt/fUJu3Hw Is anyone aware of a 'Civilisation OS'? E.g. instruction manuals for rebooting civilisation from scratch in the event that some large % of it is destroyed? I am thinking about something like nested txt files covering everything from how to make a fire to how to smelt aluminium to how pencils are made. If it doesn't exist already, anyone want to work on it?

Ask HN: How did you become better at programming?

Ask HN: How did you become better at programming? 7 by techsin101 | 10 comments on Hacker News. I've found that the difference between me and great programmers I've come across in person or online is that they have extreme mental fortitude, get unstuck on their own, and pick up new things with breeze. Whereas, I find myself going for almost academic perfection (i.e read all docs first) / mastery. Really procrastinate hard when I hit the wall and just hope for things to click. And then just get sleepy when I do start reading code. This means if I'm in my space I'm super productive, but anytime I come across something I don't have an expert level knowledge I come to complete halt. It took me lot of self introspection to realize this, so if there are other pitfalls that you have come across let me know, I might have them too.
