Tell HN: Netlify changing Starter plan

Tell HN: Netlify changing Starter plan 4 by HarveyKandola | 2 comments on Hacker News. In a nutshell.. In 30 days, our Starter plan will require that GitHub repositories connected to your Netlify account are either linked to Personal GitHub accounts or set for public visibility. If you have repositories using an Organization-owned GitHub account set to private visibility, you will need to move to the Netlify Pro plan or above.

Ask HN: What is your development strategy?

Ask HN: What is your development strategy? 2 by thowerawayer | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN, what is your development strategy? I am a relatively experienced hobby developer who recently joined the workforce. In one of my recent projects, which as a small solo project, I noticed that I was not putting in my best effort when it came to the quality of my code and work. I was so focused on the hand-off that I forgot some parts of the main feature, which ended up not working. My question is: how can I prevent this from happening again? Do you use lists or mental models to remember the main objectives? And how do you assess your own work to ensure that you didn't miss anything?

Ask HN: As an URM where are the hand out jobs people mention all the time here

Ask HN: As an URM where are the hand out jobs people mention all the time here 2 by trwayurm | 14 comments on Hacker News. Not trying to bait, I've lurked here enough and I'm trying to have a good faith discussion. As an URM who grew up in what would be considered the hood and went on to get a non-CS STEM degree (think eng/math/phys/chem,which is where my programming experience comes from) where are these jobs that people mention in anecdotal stories that URM are handed despite not being qualified? For all the diversity companies seem to signal, and everyone seems to complain about people being given jobs unfairly, my job search has not reflected that. Might be despite my STEM degree I'm not good enough, but the lack of interviews I'm landing means I'm being filtered out from the start. The way people make it out to be here, those jobs are handed out. So are companies BSing? HN comments BSing? or who is getting these URM jobs? Does anyone have any advice or willing...

Ask HN: Who has ditched their phone and what is your replacement?

Ask HN: Who has ditched their phone and what is your replacement? 2 by assemblylang | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hello HN, who here doesn't use a phone and what do you use as a replacement? I've been using my phone less and less these days, and it feels like a chore to use a modern phone now. Touch interface is slow and imprecise, apps and webapps are slow, bloated, and keep removing useful features, adblock on some systems are clunky or non-existent, VoIP and SMS are basically dead, the interface changes nearly every year (on android at least), and many other small grievances. I can get things done so much quicker on a computer with a keyboard compared to the touch interface on a phone, using a keyboard and a full desktop environment is so precise, quick, and just enjoyable to use. However, I am still hanging onto my phone for a few legacy uses, what are some good replacements for these: * Mobile wifi * VoIP * SMS Also, I am still interested in mobile computing as a concept, ...

Ask HN: How can I make links open in Incognito by default?

Ask HN: How can I make links open in Incognito by default? 2 by gnicholas | 0 comments on Hacker News. Whenever I click a link on my computer (e.g, from email or Messages), it opens by default in my browser of choice, but never in an Incognito window. Nearly 100% of the time, I want it to open in Incognito, which I use whenever I'm visiting a site that I don't need to be logged into. My current workaround is to right-click the link, copy link, switch to my browser, open a new Incognito window, paste in the link and hit return. While this doesn't seem like that big a deal, it's actually a lot of clicks (11 key presses) — compared to just one click to open a link normally. Additionally, it puts the pasted link into my pasteboard manager, which is unnecessary and annoying when I go to retrieve a snippet that is now further down in the stack. What's the best way to handle this? I've considered switching my default browser to a different browser that completely bloc...

Ask HN: Any viable alternatives to Google News?

Ask HN: Any viable alternatives to Google News? 3 by metadat | 2 comments on Hacker News. I hate how unclear the degree of echo chamber is with Google News. It also keeps showing me the same articles for days or weeks after I've already seen and read them. Are ther any real contenders out there? Ideally it'd aggregate all news across the globe and let me browse by region, perhaps with automatic translation for non-english articles. The idea of a global, non country-centric front page is highly appealing to me (I want to deprogram myself from the western slant, it possible).

Tell HN: Google deleted my spreadsheet, review request says file can't be found

I have (or had as it seems now) a spreadsheet in google docs tracking important business metrics. I was trying to look at it today and got the message: "We're sorry. You can't access this item because it is in violation of our Terms of Service. If you feel this is in error, please request a review. Find out more about this topic at the Google Drive Help Center." If I click the request a review I get: "404. That's an error. Sorry, this item cannot be found or is not available." This spreadsheet simply had metrics and domains. I find it near impossible it was violating any terms of service unless there is a shadow blacklist of domain names which somehow trigger a file being removed. And I'm left with no recourse to even request a review or get my file back? I turned on airplane mode on my phone and was able to get an old cached copy, export was only possible as a PDF. So at least I have a slightly stale version of raw data that way. Even as a paying cu...

Ask HN: How on earth are you using your Apple computer with external displays? 15 by n42 | 13 comments on Hacker News. I own four different Apple computers -- a 2017 MacBook Pro, an M1 MacBook Air, an M1 MacBook Pro, and most recently a maxed out Mac Studio. I also have had in that timespan three different Windows desktops that I have built and a ThinkPad running Windows or Linux depending on the mood. I have spent countless dollars on cables and adapters in an attempt to find the magic combination. I have read DisplayPort specs, I know every brand of certified cable. I now know way more than I would ever care to know about DisplayPort and HDMI protocols. I have tried 4 different brands and models of monitor. For one of those models, I had three of the exact same model. All combinations work flawlessly with anything that is not one of the Apple devices. I have all but eliminated any of these components being the problem. Depending on the device and the day I will get: - Visual artifac...

Ask HN: How do you future-proof yourself?

Ask HN: How do you future-proof yourself? 2 by behnamoh | 2 comments on Hacker News. Been using proprietary OSs (Windows, macOS) and I think fundamentally they're rock solid. But I also fear the day that Apple and MS either go bankrupt or just stop supporting their OSs. It happens all the time at a smaller scale, like, each version of macOS breaks some features/apps that I'm used to, and MS stops supporting Windows versions after a few years. I always thought Linux would be the most future-proof OS, but choosing something like Fedora entails the same problems as above (something being maintained by a corporation), and other distros seem too distracted that I don't know if most of them will be around in a few years anyway. Same thing with my tools. Atom was dropped in favor of VSC and Zed, despite having millions of users. Again, it seems something like Vim or Emacs would be the most future-proof alternative. Sure, VSCode is supposedly open-source, but I don't think peo...

Ask HN: What real innovation in CS can be attributed to Bitcoin? 2 by emadehsan | 2 comments on Hacker News. Not an expert in the field, my question is: Can some real ground breaking innovation in Computer Science be attributed to Bitcoin and its successors? People claim it to be: * Trustless, Proof of Work * Immutable append only ledger (Blockchain) * Smart Contracts Are any of them new concepts? While solving their problems, has the Crypto community invented any new general purpose Algorithms (or Data Structures) that could be used elsewhere? I'm curious to understand those Algorithms.

Ask HN: If you could talk to a database in plain English, would you?

Ask HN: If you could talk to a database in plain English, would you? 4 by brochington | 5 comments on Hacker News. For the past 6 months I’ve been working on a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) API. Essentially the request would contain a plain english sentence, and the response would include a breakdown of actions, entities, agents, location, temporal, logic, etc. My hope was that I could create a “Stripe/Twilio for NLU”, but recent feedback has been that it’s more a “technology”, and less a “product”. It would still require a lot of development work to create anything of value for an end user. While I see the value of an API, I also agree with their sentiment, and so I’ve begun exploring problems to apply my API to. One use case that tends to pop up frequently is “text-to-database”. Similar to text-to-SQL, but with my API I could target any DB regardless of query language. This would require a large amount of work, and I’m not convinced that it’s something that users even want. T...

Ask HN: What is the best way to Upload Images to AWS S3? 3 by fuadnafiz98 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I am building a full stack Nodejs, Express.js and React application with a file upload functionality. What will be the best approach to upload the file? 1. Upload the file from frontend to S3? 2. First upload the file to backend and then upload the file from backend to S3? What will be the best option? In my opinion the first approach is better as it doesn't require extra load on backend if the file is larger, but I am not sure about the security issues to keep the AWS credentials in the frontend code. Any suggestions are welcome :)

[$] Introducing PyScript [$] Introducing PyScript

In a keynote at PyCon 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Peter Wang introduced another entrant in the field of in-browser Python interpreters. The Python community has long sought a way to be able to write Python—instead of JavaScript—to run in web browsers, and there have been various efforts to do so over the years. Wang announced PyScript as a new framework, built atop one of those earlier projects, to allow Python scripting directly within the browser; those programs have access to much of the existing Python ecosystem as well as being able to interact with the browser document object model (DOM) directly. In addition, he gave some rather eye-opening demonstrations as part of the talk. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/718g40y via IFTTT

Ask HN: Group Mailing List for HOA?

Ask HN: Group Mailing List for HOA? 2 by teeray | 0 comments on Hacker News. Our homeowners association is looking for a simple group email solution. Does anyone have any thoughts? Need to have: one email address that broadcasts to everyone signed up for the list. Basically an outlook d-list not tied to one email provider. Nice to have: Some permissions management: Board members should be able to send emails without impedance from the system. Other members should be able to send group messages with approval from a board member. We have some older folks in the community, so this has to be drop dead simple and reliable. I’m hesitant to suggest something like Discourse because of the unfamiliar UX. Same thing for FB Groups. Email is ubiquitous, so that’s where we have to start.

Ask HN: Is scientific facts more important than scientific thinking?

Ask HN: Is scientific facts more important than scientific thinking? 2 by 3g4o53g4o5 | 2 comments on Hacker News. Scientific Fact: Up-to-date science discoveries that absolutely excludes ancient knowledge like astrology or metaphysics. Scientific Thinking: How you think when you can't do experiment about the matter at the moment. While the seemingly like term of "scientific method" is defined to be the almost same thing but when you are doing/can do experiment at the moment. I think knowing scientific facts is more important because people are just gathering pseudo-facts and that leads to the wrong conclusion all the time.

Ask HN: I struggle to hire a UI/UX designer, can anyone help? 2 by s1k3s | 1 comments on Hacker News. For the past 2 months I've been struggling to hire a web designer to create a website for me. I wrote the entire product specification, all screens and app flows, and I want a designer to take that spec and turn it into a real product design. Attempt #1: Direct hire Posted a local job and hired a person based on their portfolio. We signed the contract, and they started the project. 2 weeks later I check in and all they have done is the color palette and fonts. I don't think I'm unreasonable when I say this is way too little work for 2 weeks booked at 8 hours / day. I closed the contract afterwards and I consider I simply got scammed. Am I being unreasonable here? Attempt #2: Upwork I posted my project on Upwork for a fixed price, estimated at 300 hours and with a price per hour that matches what Upwork says is their "top freelancers". I received more than 100 app...

Ask HN: 30s and “senior” software engineer, but I suck at programming 2 by yamisobad | 6 comments on Hacker News. No I don't think its imposter syndrome. I got into tech a few years ago because I find building cool stuff, especially clone apps, to be really fun. It's like legos for me, and I build a bunch of projects using various technologies so I keep learning some new frameworks and languages. I feel good working on all sorts of applications, from backend to web and mobile apps. Unfortunately I tried to do some mock interviews (leetcode) and got demolished. I have been practicing for the last couple of months, but I just cannot solve a single medium problem on my own without looking at some help and even then it is hard for me. I think that I'm hitting my limits because I'm finding that I am not that good at actually "programming". I have a hard time thinking about some of these problems, because I can't comprehend the question itself. I can build UIs,...

What are people's recommendations for developing locally, in a way that can be easily & immediately deployed? A lot of the tutorials I can find either (a) don't mention deployment, or (b) treat it like a final step at the end, rather than something that needs to be done on a semi-frequent basis.

When I first started this business, there were not many resources on the internet, so I decided to write this blog. I want to inspire you by writing an incident that happened to me First of all, I must say that scada hacking is not like other types of hacking. Thanks to the scada system you hacked, you can sometimes cut off the electricity of a city, and sometimes cause dozens of planes to crash at an airport. I was doing bug bounty when I was 16 years old. I suffered many injustices and did not receive any money. I wanted to focus on a more serious field. First, I targeted a sector (health sector). Then I chose a country and chose India. The reason they chose India was because they pr...

Ask HN: Do You Use Enum for Yes, No, Unset?

Ask HN: Do You Use Enum for Yes, No, Unset? 10 by whitakerch | 19 comments on Hacker News. I've seen different arguments on this topic and thought I'd ask HN if you all have a standard for this. Say you have a form that's filled out and saved to a DB. One required field is a dropdown with Yes and No. But the field begins as blank to show that a value hasn't been selected yet, ensuring that the User pays attention to the field. Do you use a Nullable Bit (DB) and Nullable Bool (Code)? OR an Enum: Yes, No, Unset? You wouldn't use a boolean to represent states like say New, Processing, Done. But do you consider NULL a separate "state"? Thanks

Tell HN: Triplebyte is, yet again, making user profiles public without consent 166 by teraflop | 17 comments on Hacker News. Triplebyte (YC S15) is a tech recruiting company that operates by getting developers to take skill tests, and then using the results to match them with employers. Back in 2020, they got in a lot of hot water by suddenly announcing that user profiles -- which had been collected with assurances that the data wouldn't be shared without consent -- would be made public, unless you opted out within a week[1]. This provoked a lot of backlash, especially since the CEO seemed totally oblivious to the privacy concerns[2]. After a lot of angry comments, he publicly apologized and reversed course[3]. Then in 2021, some users started once again being notified that their profiles were automatically being made public[4]. This time, it was explained away as an "oversight" related to the fact that previously, opt-outs weren't permanent but had a hidden expirati...

Ask HN: Which programming language for a first-time coder in 2022?

Ask HN: Which programming language for a first-time coder in 2022? 4 by headmelted | 5 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been asked recently by a buddy who’s kid (13) wants to learn programming but isn’t sure where is best to start. My gut feeling is something like Python might make the most sense, but wanted to ask the room. Criteria I’m working on are: 1) Ease to get to “Hello World”. 2) Kid-friendly, easily available learning resources. 3) Low setup complexity. It’s been so long since I’ve been there (VB6!) that it’s harder to know in 2022 what the right advice to give is for someone just starting out. I also thought about steering them to HTML first, but I don’t think the open web as the same excitement factor for someone starting out in 2022 that it did for me back in the day (which is a shame). What do you folks think?

The "Hertzbleed" vulnerability The "Hertzbleed" vulnerability

Today's branded, logo-equipped vulnerability is known as Hertzbleed ; it affects x86 processors (at least) and can be exploited in some situations to extract cryptographic keys from a remote server. Hertzbleed takes advantage of our experiments showing that, under certain circumstances, the dynamic frequency scaling of modern x86 processors depends on the data being processed. This means that, on modern processors, the same program can run at a different CPU frequency (and therefore take a different wall time) when computing, for example, 2022 + 23823 compared to 2022 + 24436. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/VFK6tZf via IFTTT

I'm making a small free web app in Django with bootstrap for frontend for small-size farmers to exchange services in between each others, the app will have no more then a 1000 users. Along the way i stumbled with a lot of problems: * phone version * chat in with selected groups of users * deployment and security I tried making it in django-rest with vue or using uvicorn and django-chat and even implementing my own chat system but it complicated the whole project a whole lot. Is something like firebase or aws lambda with preact or petite-vue with ionic(for phone version) better for these kind of small apps ? I'm looking for a different web framework that will have all these things included with minimal code required. I just would like to get it shipped as fast as possible. Do you have any suggestions ? Thanks in advance
