Tell HN: Enterprises spend 10x more to build no-code solutions than coded ones

Code less sounds great for toy projects. People who aren't in tech aren't building no colde solutions beyond basic excel ones. So they end up hiring consultants to build them for them which costs at least 3-10x more if the solution were to be made with code. Ms powerapps for an example needs connector license for many basic things that costs a lot as well. This is from my experience as a consultant in many enterprises over last 3yrs watching code less explode in front my eyes. Ask HN: How do your ML teams version datasets and models? 5 by skadamat | 2 comments on Hacker News. Git worked until we hit a few gigabytes. S3 scales super well but version control, documentation, and change management isn't great (we just did lots of "v1" or "vsep28_2023" names). DVC felt very clunky (now I need git AND s3 AND dvc) by the team. What best practices and patterns have you seen work or have you implemented yourself?

Insomnia's update locks out prev user data, forces account creation w/o warning

Insomnia's update locks out prev user data, forces account creation w/o warning 10 by huy-nguyen | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm a long time user of Insomnia API client (https://insomnia.rest) without an account and was prompted to update the app an hour ago. I thought this was a regular feature update and accepted. After the app relaunches, it gives me the option to create an account with them or use without an account. When I choose the latter, my data is gone. Many others are reporting the same problem (https://ift.tt/XK6Mhcl). It's actually a good app but this strong-arming behavior is simply unacceptable to me. What other choices do I have? Postman for Mac?

Ask HN: Do high refresh rate monitors make it hard to go back?

Ask HN: Do high refresh rate monitors make it hard to go back? 2 by hypertexthero | 4 comments on Hacker News. I’m considering getting a high refresh rate (up to 165Hz) 27in screen as a primary monitor to take center-stage away from my 75Hz one, which would become the secondary screen for gaming and streaming, and primary screen for graphic design. A concern is whether I’d become ‘spoiled’ by playing games at higher refresh rates and thereafter perceive 60fps in games as ‘slow’, thus ’creating’ more of my own graphics performance issues. Any thoughts on this?

Ask HN: Anyone from Meta?

Ask HN: Anyone from Meta? 3 by bedobi | 0 comments on Hacker News. Since it's so hard to get bug reports looked at figured I might try here though I realize it's grasping at straws It seems like a not uncommon bug (~30 million hits on google) is for your insta account to get into a state where it no longer plays music added to stories, instead displaying an error "This song is currently unavailable" (even though it plays for literally everyone else and it used to play for you just fine) STEPS Using the instagram app, open a story that has music added (ie not music from the recording itself) (could be your story or someone elses) EXPECTED Music plays ACTUAL "This song is currently unavailable" (even for stories with music you know for a fact was playing fine for you before, and you know for a fact the music is playing for literally everyone else) MISC My hypothesis is that this happens because insta has somehow decided the account is in a region where the ri...

Ask HN: Is anyone pursuing longshot tech for recycling / remediating landfills?

Ask HN: Is anyone pursuing longshot tech for recycling / remediating landfills? 3 by in_vestor | 3 comments on Hacker News. I have had a lifelong interest in cleaning up trash—-something that’s probably rooted in deep-seated aesthetics and maybe a bit of OCD. My first career was in standard finance/tech and left me with enough flexibility to try to do something I’m really passionate about. I have rigorously followed the academic literature and commercial development of recycling tech. It has been a disheartening journey. Recycling doesn’t work as well as people think. Promising solutions like plasma gasification had lots of engineering and economic challenges. A recent push in Europe for landfill mining went nowhere. What is really needed is a single stream solution where almost any material can go in the front end, and out the back end comes useful elemental products or inert products. Is anyone working on long-shot technology that would do this? If so, I would like to network. I’m n...

Ask HN: Small Developer Attempting to Verifying Large Corp Stats 4 by araes | 1 comments on Hacker News. General Question: Being a small app developer (like 1-5), how do you verify anything Google (or any FAANG frankly) tells you? Bgd: Made a few apps. Tried them out on the store. Found that the stats looked "suspicious." People do not even accidentally find my apps. Back in 2021, humans apparently download 111.3 billion mobile apps. Not mine. At least based on the stats Google shows me. Google says I had ~10 downloads over the last 3 years, and ~100 looks ever (mostly spike on release and then no looks ever again). Honestly, maybe the app store situation is just horrible, and with 3500 apps a day, there's no reason to ever waste months making anything unless you've got deep advertising pockets or an already known brand. I have already mostly gotten out because of the "Update Your Target API" issue. However, had a similar issue with YouTube. Made videos in ...

Tell HN: TIL: GNU Make .DELETE_ON_ERROR

Tell HN: TIL: GNU Make .DELETE_ON_ERROR 6 by kazinator | 0 comments on Hacker News. If you have a make recipe which creates the target file, or modifies the timestamp of the existing out-or-date target, and that recipe fails, make will not delete the target. Thus it looks up-to-date, even though the recipe failed. The manual says: "So generally the right thing to do is to delete the target file if the recipe fails after beginning to change the file. make will do this if .DELETE_ON_ERROR appears as a target. This is almost always what you want make to do, but it is not historical practice; so for compatibility, you must explicitly request it." So, hidden in the manual is the recommendation that, it's good practice to have .DELETE_ON_ERROR: somewhere in every GNU Makefile. An example where this is relevant: foo: bar generate bar > foo # redirection is used redirection will create the file or touch the timestamp of the existing one before the generate command is run. Show HN: Hydra - Open-Source Columnar Postgres

hi hn, hydra ceo here hydra is an open-source extension that adds columnar tables to Postgres for efficient analytical reporting. With Hydra, you can analyze billions of rows instantly without changing code. demo video (5 min): https://youtu.be/1yzxgb0Oyrw github repo: https://github.com/hydradatabase/hydra For 1.0 GA release, aggregate queries are over *60% faster* than Hydra beta due to aggregate vectorization. Spatial indexes (gin, gist, spgist, and rum indexes) and pg_hint_plan are now enabled for performance optimization. postgres is great, but aggregates can take minutes to hours to return results on large data sets. long-running analytical queries hog database resources and degrade performance. use hydra to run much faster analytics on postgres without changing code. for testing, try the hydra free tier to create a column postgres instance on the cloud. https://dashboard.hydra.so/signup Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37571974 Points: 40 # Comments: 5 from Ha...

Ask HN: How serious is the WebP bug? 3 by skilled | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have not seen any in-depth coverage of this so I thought I would ask HN and perhaps people with more expertise can provide clarity. For starters, the context: https://ift.tt/ThjyoMX https://ift.tt/WDsy67i https://ift.tt/MUx83mG https://ift.tt/H40So7g —————— Google themselves said in their update that they found the vulnerability thanks to Citizen Lab, does this mean that the CVE affects and can be exploited in more than just browsers - realistically speaking. The CVE was assigned specifically to Chrome and it says “through a maliciously crafted HTML page”, but wasn’t the iOS bug specific to iMessage? That is also the part I don’t understand fully. Quite a few software/projects have pushed an update for their libwebp versions now, so that’s why I am curious.

Ask HN: Are there good Cloudflare alternatives? e.g., edge cache, firewall 6 by wanqu | 1 comments on Hacker News. Contexts - Relying on Cloudflare to be the gateway of all of our production traffics is scary. Currently we are on Enterprise plan, but we don't know if phone support is possible and email support is very slow - typically takes a few days for one reply. We have an open ticket opened ~1 month ago and they still can't answer some basic questions. Can't imagine what to do if there's big outage on their end or mistakes made by their human operators. Ideally, there's a good Cloudflare alternative, and we can easily update our dns customer server to point to that alternative when Cloudflare has outage (or caused by their human operators mistakes).

Ask HN: What's Your Desktop Background?

Ask HN: What's Your Desktop Background? 3 by DiggyJohnson | 6 comments on Hacker News. I have a small collection of images: "Earth in the Background". It's currently only four images, each different photographs from spacecraft and landers that includes the Earth. The real obvious ones include the original and revisited (2020) Pale Blue Dot photos from the Voyager 1 mission. Closer to home, there is Blue Marble (Apollo 17) and Earthrise (Apollo 8). My favorites are a view of the horizon on Mars night with Earth and the moon faintly visible in the sky (Curiosity). There's also a good one from Cassini that includes Saturn's rings and Earth, but it makes the screen look cracked. Anyways, I never really think much about this collection, and throw one on whenever I get a new machine. I prefer quiet backgrounds, nothing too noisy or flashy - I've even had solid colored backgrounds for many years. What do you use for your desktop background / wallpaper?

Show HN: Loopy – share and find and music you love

Hi, I created loopy, a website to share and discover music you love. A former coworker answered an ice breaker question saying his superpower would be to know every language fluently since he travels a lot. Mine would be to hear every song I would fall in love with. I realized that I will die without hearing every song that I will fall in love with. So many of my all-time favorite songs I randomly have heard at a club, coffee shop, traveling, walking by a store, etc. There is a high chance that I would have never heard those songs. Loopy aims to fix this. You can post your all-time favorite songs. If someone else love this song, there is a chance you will too :). Ask HN: Charging a Client for On-Call Time

Ask HN: Charging a Client for On-Call Time 4 by undefined_user6 | 3 comments on Hacker News. The company I freelance as a developer for recently lost the main on-call developer and now I've become the person available 24/7 if anything happens. It rarely does, but it's still a bit of a burden on me to always have that in the back of my head. I've been on-call in this way for about three months now. I charge by the hour. I am thinking of charging the client $1000/month in addition to my billable hours for my 24/7 availability. One more thing to consider: I am the _only_ developer. The bus factor here is 1. If they lose me, they are going to be in serious trouble to keep their business running long-term. I mention this because I want to make sure I'm not extorting them (i.e. "pay me more money or I'm leaving and you're screwed") and also so it doesn't _appear_ that I'm extorting them. My questions: * Is $1,000/month a reasonable amount to bill fo...

Show HN: WhatsApp-Llama: A clone of yourself from your WhatsApp conversations

Hello HN! I've been thinking about the idea of a LLM thats a clone of me - instead of generating replies to be a helpful assistant, it generates replies that are exactly like mine. The concept's appeared in fiction numerous times (the talking paintings in Harry Potter that mimic the person painted, the clones in The Prestige), and I think with LLMs, there might actually be a possibility of us doing something like this! I've just released a fork of the facebookresearch/llama-recipes which allows you to fine-tune a Llama model on your personal WhatsApp conversations. This adaptation can train the model (using QLoRA) to respond in a way that's eerily similar to your own texting style. What I've figured out so far: Quick Learning: The model quickly adapts to personal nuances, emoji usage, and phrases that you use. I've trained just 1 epoch on a P100 GPU using QLoRA and 4 bit quantization, and its already captured my mannerisms Turing Tests: As an experiment, I asked...

Ask HN: Online Reservation scams: what’s the worst you’ve seen? 3 by tonymet | 0 comments on Hacker News. We did a road trip around Washington and ran into a number of reservation scams. Online hotel booking specified $47/ night in “taxes and recovery fees” – actual taxes per night were only $11. Online hotel reservation charged $15 / night for parking – but upon arrival we discovered parking was free and un-ticketed . $15 charge for nothing. USFS campsites offer 50% discount for America The Beautiful pass holders when paying in person, but reservations.gov does not honor the discount. Also reservations.gov charges a 10% booking fee. A $13 campsite in person costs $30 /night booked online. When visiting a popular tourist town, public parking was $6 / day. Using the recommended app to book daily parking rates were charging $20 — a > 300% increase. In the end we booked in person to avoid the scam. We saved over 50% on the hotel and 75% on daily parking. "Hello, We hope this message finds you well. We're writing to inform you about an upcoming change in our GraphQL API. As you may be aware, we recently released a major new update to Fauna's database language that provides a familiar, TypeScript inspired interface into the database. We have received very strong positive feedback from customers on the new FQL as being much more intuitive and powerful than previous versions of FQL or our GraphQL interface. In addition, many customers have also expressed confusion with our GraphQL API as it relates to the functionality available from broader GraphQL products like Apollo, Hasura, and Grafbase. As a result we have made the decision to stop investing in our GraphQL API. Instead we will focus on continuing to enhance FQL, adding function...

Ask HN: Where can you safely ask beginner-level questions online in 2023? 5 by whitfieldsdad | 5 comments on Hacker News. What are some of your favourite websites for asking beginner-level questions where you won't be laughed out of the room for being a beginner say, 30-50% of the time? Facebook seems hit or miss - some Facebook groups are okay with beginners, others hate them. Twitter is prone to the no-network effect where you can only really ask questions if you have a strong follower base that's open to answering your questions - nobody really uses hashtags, so, you have to be a "reply guy" if you want to ask questions. Reddit is nice, but I was banned from Reddit for life for saying that the new Harry Potter game looks good and probably isn't a call to arms for Nazis - trying to be a voice of reason, rather than a Nazi, or, whatever I got banned from the platform for life for - and haven't bothered setting up Tor yet. Quora seems interesting, but, I don...

Amazon and Uber Eats Drivers Capturing Residents in Photos: Invasion of Privacy?

Amazon and Uber Eats Drivers Capturing Residents in Photos: Invasion of Privacy? 5 by notinthegovt | 8 comments on Hacker News. hi, i’ve been staying at a friend’s apartment for a few days, working from the couch which faces the windows. nearly every day, an Amazon or Uber Eats driver rushes up the stairs, peering through the window as they look for the right apartment. we often lock eyes, creating an awkward moment. then they place the delivery down, step back, and snap a photo. i find this extremely unsettling. i’m in a private residence, yet the chance of me appearing in a photo has significantly increased. considering how Live Photos work on smartphones, the camera is essentially recording everything it sees until the photo is taken. also to note nefarious use and wide angle lenses… does anyone else find this invasive? how and why are Amazon and Uber Eats allowed to carry out such practices?

Show HN: Open-source Postman alternative with type safety

Hello! This is Jeane and Samuel and we’re building RecipeUI. RecipeUI is an open source Postman alternative that uses TypeScript to statically type and autocomplete requests. We built this because current API tools don’t deal with the fact that some APIs are just painful to work with. For us, it’s usually error after error as we try to figure out how to properly form the first request. We recorded a demo to show you how TypeScript helps us autocomplete a request correctly. https://youtu.be/O_Mly_p-g5s How does our platform improve the developer experience? The analogy is similar to using a statically typed language vs dynamically typed. Most API tools are dynamically typed. You’re guessing the params and relying on the request to magically work at runtime, only for you to go back to stack overflow or the docs when it doesn’t. We take the approach of defining parameters and the schema first. When you add a new parameter, you need to mention upfront if it’s required and what type it is (...

Ask HN: Looking for an Alternative to Stripe

Ask HN: Looking for an Alternative to Stripe 5 by fuckgoogleplay | 1 comments on Hacker News. Hi. We're using Stripe and we got hit by a bunch of friendly fraud where we see an easy solution how to prevent this from happening - blocking a specific bank. But Stripe does not give you the BIN of the cards, and will not allow you to block by card issuer name. BIN databases cost like $2.500 per year and I'm not sure how accurate they are. Why on Earth Stripe wouldn't let us see the BINs/block by issuer names is beyond me. So I'm looking for an alternative that: 1) Supports 3DS 2) Lets you block by issuer name 3) Shows you the BIN (not really needed if #2 is available, but nice to have an shows that the processor cares about the merchant) Is there a good option? Thanks

Ask HN: Computing Side Project Ideas? 3 by zerojames | 1 comments on Hacker News. This year, I have been striving toward one of my long-term goals: to build a programming language. This has been a great way to exercise my technical muscles. I wonder what other "computing"-type side project ideas are out there in which one would refine their programming skills (as opposed to interest-based projects like an app to do X or projects with monetization potential). Examples off the top of my head: - Make a programming language - Build a database or query language - Build a kernel module - Implement a protocol (TCP, HTTP, UDP) - Write code in a functional language - Implement Git What other ideas fall into this category?

Show HN: I mirrored all the code from PyPI to GitHub and analysed it

This is a side project I've been working on for the last few months. I built an automated system to continuously mirror all the code on PyPI to a series of Github repositories. Mirroring PyPI code to Github enables: 1. Scanning of all new Python packages for accidentally published credentials 2. A browsable/searchable index of published code with a nice UI 3. Large-scale analysis of all published code to see how the language is evolving Using this project anyone is able to download the contents of PyPI to their personal machine and analyse every piece of code ever published in a matter of hours. I hope it enables people to do things with the worlds largest and oldest corpus of Python code that wasn't possible before, and while this is likely totally useless to most people I think that is kind of cool and unique. I'm currently paging though The Linux Commands Handbook by Flavio Copes which I'm finding good! But I don't want just one resource. I've been a windows user for a long time but have recently been fairly frustrated with it. Things like ads injected into system menus, and the absurd double-layer of settings configurations, are turning me off it, so I've decided to give Linux a try. I've opted for Kubuntu, for a small-step-first introduction and I'm very impressed with how smooth it is. In fact I'm pretty sure I could just use it casually barely noticing it wasn't windows based - an amazing thing when comparing a community project to the mainstay product of one of the world's largest corps. But that's not my aim. I'd prefer to understand the OS a bit more deeply ...

I don't mind if it has a fee if that removes ads. And I don't want partisan sources.

Show HN: Modular Diffusion – A modular Python library for diffusion models

Hello everyone! I've been working on this project for a few months as part of my thesis in Machine Learning. It's meant to be a library that provides an easy-to-use but flexible API to design and train Diffusion Models. I decided to make it because I wanted to quickly prototype a Diffusion Model but there were no good tools to do it with. I think it really can help people prototype their own Diffusion Models a lot faster and only in a few lines of code. The base idea is to have a Model class that takes different modules corresponding to the different aspects of the Diffusion Model process (noise schedule, noise type, denoising network, loss function, guidance, etc.) and allow the user to mix and match different modules to achieve different results. The library ships with a bunch of prebuilt modules and the plan is to add many more. I also made it super easy to implement your own modules, you just need to extend from one of the base classes available. Contrary to HuggingFace Dif...
