Ask HN: Share your favorite examples of shell script abuse

Ask HN: Share your favorite examples of shell script abuse 2 by ofalkaed | 0 comments on Hacker News. I have a real soft spot for shell scripts with no sense of reality, exercises in a beginners enthusiasm. Like many, shell scripting was my introduction into programming and after learning bash and making those few simple scripts I learned it for I wanted to use it for everything to exploit my new knowledge. All these years later seeing the overly ambitious shell script never fails to bring back the excitement of those early successes and return a sense of scope to my own projects when bogged down in the details with nothing yet to show for it all. So share your favorite abuses or just any that come to mind. I just came across bed, the bash editor [0], I was really expecting a complete nightmare and a massive script that barely functioned but was pleasantly surprised by how short and clean it is. Despite being essentially useless (beyond as an exercise) you could use it as an editor, I...

So just a heads up for any Brex customers who do business in foreign (non-US) countries know that you'll get charge 3% going forward.

Ask HN: How do you plan on protecting yourself from being replaced by AIs? 4 by FrenchDevRemote | 7 comments on Hacker News. I know, I know, coders aren't getting replaced by AIs...for now, given the exponential rate at which AI is progressing, I'm getting kind of worried about my employability in let's say, 5 years or something. What would you learn right now to make yourself future proof? I'm a fullstack web dev, and a bit of a jack of all trades, I'm not sure about which path to follow, I have a basic knowledge of how a few AI algorithms works(nothing really advanced but still more than 99% of people, which isn't really a good benchmark but whatever), I don't know anything besides tech, and if our jobs get automated away, I frankly don't know what I'll do.(maybe I'll just hope I'll have enough money to buy a lodge and a piece of land by then lol)

How to get started learning modern AI?

How to get started learning modern AI? 6 by gofaifan | 3 comments on Hacker News. Neural networks! Bah! If I wanted a black box design that I don't understand, I would make one! I want rules and symbolic processing that offers repeatable results and expected outcomes! ...and maybe there's still a place for that. But for someone who has been possibly foolish and ignoring neural network-oriented AI, where's the best place to start learning? Go back to the basics of recurrent neural networks, deep learning texts, and so forth? Or is there a shortcut into the hip and popular transformer-based technology at this point?

[$] Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default [$] Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default

Canonical recently announced that it will no longer ship Flatpak as part of its default installation for the various official Ubuntu flavors , which is in keeping with the practices of the core Ubuntu distribution. The Flatpak package format has gained popularity among Linux users for its convenience and ease of use. Canonical will focus exclusively on its own package-management system, Snap . The decision has caused disgruntlement among some community members, who felt like the distribution was making this decision without regard for its users. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/bE2L8tP via IFTTT

Show HN: Time-tracker that helps me with context switches and documentation

Hi HN! I was feeling incredibly frustrated with my struggles in context-switching and writing documentation, so I decided to take action and find a solution. I wrote a simple tool for Alfred and Raycast that helps me be more mindful when switching between tasks, which can even prevent some of those switches. Plus, I can jot down quick notes on each task as I go, making it easier to document everything once I’m finished. This tool is really simple with only 5 commands - tsr, tsn, tsl, tsv, tse tsr writes a new record tsn writes a new note tsl shows you the current task tsv builds a static html page displaying a single timeline of the tasks and notes tse opens the directory where records are stored for easy manual editing TSR stores your data as simple csv files in ~/tsr, making it super easy to integrate with other tools or perform your own custom analysis and visualisation magic. The built-in tsv timeline visualisation is rather simple and doesn’t do any analysis (for now at least). It...

Tell HN: Airbnb can charge you anything and there is nothing you can do about it

Tell HN: Airbnb can charge you anything and there is nothing you can do about it 5 by tomas789 | 2 comments on Hacker News. As a part time digital nomad, I use AirBnB quite oftern. It just happened to me that something broke during our stay. Host submited a claim to AirBnB about that (which is Ok) and they included a few other supposedly broken things. Fortunately I took some pictures before departure. I submited those to AirBnB as part of the mediation process they have. So far so good. And the result? A single person reviewed the case and concluded that I should pay for everything. I asked them to review it again as they probably missed that picture. The response was that I agree in T&C that their decision is final and they will not be reviewing again. I asked to escalate the issue but the answer (from the same person who reviewed it) was the same. I understand they have to draw the line somewhere but a single person deciding whether you need to pay something without any way of ...

Garrett: We need better support for SSH host certificates Garrett: We need better support for SSH host certificates

Matthew Garrett looks at the recent disclosure of GitHub's private host key, how it probably came about, and what a better approach to key management might look like. The main problem is that client tooling just doesn't handle this well. OpenSSH has no way to do TOFU for CAs, just the keys themselves. This means there's no way to do a git clone ssh://git@github.com/ whatever and get a prompt asking you to trust Github's CA. Instead, you need to add a @cert-authority github.com (key) line to your known_hosts file by hand, and since approximately nobody's going to do that there's only marginal benefit in going to the effort to implement this infrastructure. The most important thing we can do to improve the security of the SSH ecosystem is to make it easier to use certificates, and that means improving the behaviour of the clients. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/IcZk5GW via IFTTT

Show HN: Watermelon – GPT-powered code contextualizer

Hey there HN! We're Esteban and Esteban and we are looking to get feedback for the new version of our GPT-powered, open-source code contextualizer. We're starting with a VS Code extension that indexes information from git (GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket integrations available), Slack and Jira to explain the context around a file or block of code. Finally, we summarize such aggregated context using the power of GPT. As devs we know that it's very annoying to look at a new codebase and start understanding all the nuances, particularly when the person who wrote the code already left the company. With this problem in mind, we decided to build this solution. You'll be able to get into "the ghost" of the person who left the company. Soon, we will also be building a GitHub Action that does the same thing as the VS Code extension but at the time of creating a PR: Index the most relevant information related to this new PR, and add it as a comment. Show HN: Public transportation signage based on bloom filters (rough mockup)

Hello, I was running around Germany, hectically navigating public transportation, and getting lost all the time. I noticed that every station had i platforms, each used lists of n buses (trains, whatever) arriving, each has their list of m destinations. That means I would be scanning i x n x m items just to see if I was at the correct stop. As I was nervous, for every bus that arrived, I would rescan the list of stops to double check. I began thinking how I could make a better system. Linked is a very shoddy mockup of how bloom filters could be used to allow passengers O(1) lookup time for which platform+bus is the correct one. I believe it's likely for public transportation to grow increasingly more complex in the future, as population grows, and under the current list-based system, this will make the signage ever more complex. I think some bloom filter mechanism could reduce that complexity. So, here is my fantasy, my day dream. What do you think? Comments URL: https://news.ycomb...

With pandas I am not so fluent and find myself using Google or Stackoverflow to look for answers which I think is a source of errors and waste of time. Also I work sporadically with pandas so once I get one data analysis project done I don't really consolidate the experience and come back feeling like a fresher a few months later. Architecturally I don't find Pandas strange, that is, I understand the benefits of column oriented processing (and learned that people who fund data analysis startups don't want to fund anything else,) so it's not strange to me that you're supposed to build a dataframe a column at a time as opposed to row at a time. Still, I find that the "pandas way" of doin...

Ask HN: Should I sign a pay cut agreement?

Hi! My employer recently announced a 10% pay cut across the board. Where I live(South Africa), employee consent is required. The company sent out a document asking us to sign in agreement. ---- This is the state of things now: * Company laid an unknown number of employees off, and laid them off without letting employees know until a week later in a meeting where they announced pay cuts * The company is pretty much full remote and the office is a nice-to-have. It is in a very expensive part of town. * Lunches once a week are catered at the office * I asked what happens if one were not to sign, and the response was "Oh, we haven't thought about that. We're hoping that everyone pulls together." * The situation will be reviewed quarterly * Company says they don't expect it to last very long, also citing this for why they kept the office ---- A few things stand out to me and feel like red flags, namely: * They chose to cut salaries rather than cut the office rent and c...

Ask HN: Why doesn't OpenAI care more about ChatGPT's UX? 3 by fdeage | 1 comments on Hacker News. Like many people here, I have been using ChatGPT almost since its launch. Considering the massive adoption, I am a bit surprised that the interface hasn't evolved one bit in 3 months. My issues: - Why is there no shortcut to my account/profile settings from ChatGPT's left panel? - Why are my DALL-E money and ChatGPT/API money kept separate? These are two products from the same company, asking twice for my CC number. - Why do I have to refresh my page manually every time something went wrong? Couldn't the page either refresh itself or recreate a clean connexion? - Why isn't there a "log in" button from OpenAI's landing page, plus a SSO detecting that I am already connected and linking (for instance) to my account, the products I use, etc.? - Why are their URLs so confusing? DALL-E is living at "labs.openai.com" (for the actual product) or ...

Ask HN: Is there a service that can search multiple video streaming services? 2 by taubek | 1 comments on Hacker News. Is there a service that checkes multiple video streaming services based on provided geo location? When I try to Google for movie or series title it almost always says that, it may depend on my location. I even ended up with Amazon prime subscription. I was logged in to Amazon. They have my address. They knew who I was. I wanted to rent a movie, it was offered to me. Until the last step. Than I was told "not avaliable in your country".

Tell HN: Apple Subscription Trials 3 by noncoml | 1 comments on Hacker News. A bit of unfair practice from Apple that I thought to bring to HN attention. Normally when you get a trial on a subscription for any third party app/service, you still have access to it until the end of trial period, even if you cancel the subscription. For Apple services however, like Apple TV, your trial period ends immediately and you lose access as soon as you cancel the subscription.

Ask HN: Roast My Startup

Ask HN: Roast My Startup 2 by vbond | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hey HN Been working on this really hard for quite some time. Need a reality check. Remindful is an external memory for people with busy lives. It's like an endless notebook where you can get instant answers about anything you have stored. It works in messenger apps like Whatsapp. I'm guessing this is in the category of "Productivity Apps", the closest competitors seems to be apps like Evernote. If you use something like Evernote - at some point it becomes really hard to find stuff, you need to start categorizing, creating folders or labels, etc... With Remindful you don't have to categorize and search, just ask questions. This is the main differentiator. Would this be too far out for people to understand? Website: https://remindful.ai/

Tell Hacker News: Pipl.com Silently adds a $500 monthly minimum for API Use 2 by zeronight | 0 comments on Hacker News. I got email from Pipl support to re-check my use case and ensure it is inline with their acceptable use policy [1], after explaining what I used the product for they dropped this in the same email thread with no other context. >Thank you for providing that information! I do want to advise that there is now a $500 monthly minimum in place for all of our API customers. If you do not perform the required number of queries each month to bring you to the $500 threshold, you will still be charged the full $500. If you are okay with this, we can accept a written consent over email and I will have our billing team put that minimum in place so you can continue to use our API. They used to have no minimum and you would be billed per use monthly. It looks like they have removed all mention of pricing from there website as well. You can see other sites have captured the price...

[$] Rules as code for more responsive governance [$] Rules as code for more responsive governance

Using rules as code to help bridge the gaps between policy creation, its implementation, and its, often unintended, effects on people was the subject of a talk by Pia Andrews on the first day of the inaugural Everything Open conference in Melbourne, Australia. She has long been exploring the space of open government, and her talk was a report on what she and others have been working on over the last seven years. Everything Open is the successor to the long-running, well-regarded linux.conf.au (LCA); Andrews (then Pia Waugh) gave the opening keynote at LCA 2017 in Hobart, Tasmania, and helped organize the 2007 event in Sydney. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/L1xfhMZ via IFTTT

Ask HN: Anyone else noticed the media's push to label websites as “platforms”? 3 by qzx_pierri | 1 comments on Hacker News. Sometime within the past 5 years, the term "platform" has been used by the media and other public figures endlessly when referring to websites, and I don't understand why. Is this another way for advertisers and their collaborators to further lock down the web and mute its approachable nature? It's not exactly a secret that, when discussing web connected functionalities, there has been a consistent effort throughout the past decade to abstract away the underlying nature to the average person - This allows products to be sold to them that otherwise would have been reserved for enthusiast circles. Just as an example, let's look at "cloud storage". To the average person 10 years ago, paying $5 per month to get 100GB of storage on a dedicated server with shared hosting was completely outside of their understanding. But then comes t...

Ask HN: Which stack is as boring (good boring) and cheap in 2023 as PHP?

Ask HN: Which stack is as boring (good boring) and cheap in 2023 as PHP? 4 by alentred | 3 comments on Hacker News. It is 2023 and I want to develop a web app (backend) as a part of an MVP. Here's the twist: I want to: - use boring technology - iterate fast - deploy with minimal cost for now The web frameworks I have used recently (Spring, Rails, Express, Django, Flask, Elixir) coupled with Heroku, or Fly.io, or Kubernetes - they just don't cut it for me. Don't get me wrong: I have used most of the above in production and they fit and perform well, not for an MVP though. The closest I had it to my taste was with serverless (Zappa on AWS Lambda), but it felt like the framework was quite immature by the time. Some long time ago I have been using PHP. I only have vague memories of copying files over FTP, having my site deployed instantly, and at practically no cost (hey, even with a "shared" DB). Development was fun, but I don't know if I am romanticizing it now...

I don't really like reading reddit anymore because I'm not convinced a large majority of the content is genuine. Reading anything in the news or anything political or even product recommendations just seems overly astroturfed and not genuine. Facebook isn't really an option because Facebook still puts crap in your feed that has corporate interests, and people don't really friend strangers.

Seemingly every engineer we spoke with had examples of errant queries that ended up causing significant harm in production environments (data loss/service interruptions). We’ve seen a few different approaches to how changes to production databases occur today: Option 1: all engineers have production write access (highest speed, highest risk) Option 2: one or a few engineers have write access (medium speed, high risk) Option 3: engineers request temporary access to make changes (low speed, medium risk) Option 4: all updates are checked into version control and run manually or through CI/CD (low speed, low ri...

Show HN: Plato – Airtable for your SQL database

Hi! I've been a member of HN for fifteen years so today I'm very excited to share Plato. Plato is an Airtable-like interface for your Postgres or MySQL database. It's an admin panel for devs and non-devs alike to manage your DB. We see teams use Plato for customer support, customer success, ops, etc.. We built Plato because we think more people should be able to build and extend internal tools. We thought it was strange that even though low-code is supposed to democratize development, all of the low-code internal tool builders are marketed to engineers! Airtable is a familiar UI that fits the relational model well, so we've been inspired by their work. Even the engineers on our team use Plato quite a bit, since it's often easier than spinning up a SQL prompt. Some features: - Postgres and MySQL support - Visual query controls (sorts, filters, hiding columns). No SQL. - Joins by "expanding" foreign keys - Virtual columns for tracking new data - Auto-generat...

Tell HN: Stripe raising price on international charges, keeping chargeback fees

Tell HN: Stripe raising price on international charges, keeping chargeback fees 4 by ceejayoz | 1 comments on Hacker News. Via email: > Over the past few years, card networks have increased the total fees that Stripe pays for card processing. Because of these costs, starting June 1, Stripe’s additional fee for international card transactions will change from 1.0% to 1.5%. There’s no change to our standard 2.9% + $0.30 pricing for US card transactions. > Whether you win or lose a dispute, card networks charge Stripe a fee in either case. To cover these costs, starting June 1, Stripe will no longer return the $15 dispute fee for successfully contested disputes. The dispute fee itself is not changing.

Show HN: BBC “In Our Time”, categorised by Dewey Decimal, heavy lifting by GPT

I'm a big fan of the BBC podcast In Our Time -- and (like most people) I've been playing with the OpenAI APIs. In Our Time has almost 1,000 episodes on everything from Cleopatra to the evolution of teeth to plasma physics, all still available, so it's my starting point to learn about most topics. But it's not well organised. So here are the episodes sorted by library code. It's fun to explore. Web scraping is usually pretty tedious, but I found that I could send the minimised HTML to GPT-3 and get (almost) perfect JSON back: the prompt includes the Typescript definition. At the same time I asked for a Dewey classification... and it worked. So I replaced a few days of fiddly work with 3 cents per inference and an overnight data run. My takeaway is that I'll be using LLMs as function call way more in the future. This isn't "generative" AI, more "programmatic" AI perhaps? So I'm interested in what temperature=0 LLM usage looks like (you ...

Most Apple News+ articles are free anyway

Most Apple News+ articles are free anyway 4 by hot_gril | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've noticed that almost every Apple News+ article is actually free from the original source. Occasionally it's WSJ which actually costs money, but somehow Apple is trying to monetize a lot of content from random sources that are normally free. What kind of agreement is in place for that? For example, "Hyundai was poised to become Tesla's top contender[...]" from LA Times. In the News app, it blocks most of the article saying I have to pay for News+ and won't let me share the link. If I Google the same title and take LAT's result, there isn't a paywall: https://ift.tt/UrzfwxR

Show HN: ChatGPT and Document Parser = Ghost

I've always wanted to just upload a whole book to ChatGPT and ask questions. Obviously with the char limit that's impossible... So some buddies and I built Ghost. We have it limited to 5 pages for uploads for now, but plan on expanding the limit soon. Let me know what you guys think!
