Ask HN: It's 2022. Where should I direct the youths to learn about programming?

Ask HN: It's 2022. Where should I direct the youths to learn about programming? 2 by slyrus | 4 comments on Hacker News. So... Child #2 (18 yo) is interested in learning programming. Good "with computers" and proficient in level-appropriate math but didn't grow up as a hacker like his old man (I'll refrain from making him learn turtle graphics and BASIC). Where should I point the kid to learn the basics? I'm afraid that if I show him how to download (or, better yet, build) emacs, how to build SBCL, install SLIME, etc... and hand the kid copies of SICL and PCL someone will call child protective services on me. I imagine there was a time when the answer would have been java/awt, but those days seem long gone. Maybe there was a let's do it all in javascript phase, but that doesn't seem to be the answer today. So... modern starter pack? VS Code and Python? Tell him to learn Pandas/SciPy/NumPy? Are there any highly recommended online courses for learning t...

Ask HN: Is the EULA on my new $30k RED cinema camera legal?

TLDR: I bought a $30K professional cinema camera that doesn't work unless I sign away my rights to privacy and possibly the video content I make with it ( at least it seems ) Over the past few years my photography business has seen a surge in demand for ultra high quality video production work. In an effort to meet this demand, I picked up one of RED Digital Cinema's newest pro camera bodies, the RED V-RAPTOR. Considering this camera is used by professional filmmakers to create films destined for cinemas, it's not surprising that it came with a $30k price tag. After unboxing and assembling it, I power the camera on and the first thing I see is a wall of legal text on the embedded LCD. Turns out it's a "Software License Agreement" that I'm required to consent to using the on-camera menu buttons before any of the camera's functionality becomes available. I can give consent or power the camera off. The full text can be found on the manufacturer's webs...

Tell HN: By default, New Relic will start collecting production log data on 5/3

Unless you've been very careful, your production logs almost certainly contain secrets or personally identifying information. I was surprised (and annoyed) to receive the email below from New Relic, stating that on 5/3 they will start ingesting all production log data, by default. To make matters worse, if you provisioned New Relic through Heroku, you can only opt out (by enabling High Security Mode) if you contact support. And if you're on the free plan, you can't open support tickets so have to ask on the community forum. > New Relic APM agents will collect log data starting 5/3! We’ve been hard at work making improvements to our APM and logging capabilities, and when you update certain APM agents starting May 3, 2022, logs will be automatically collected and sent to New Relic One. Logs are a critical telemetry type for observability and this new feature will help you troubleshoot your applications faster. You probably have a few questions—including how to customize yo...

Ask HN: What companies have jobs in low-level programming? 2 by 3a2d29 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello all, I am a current Java backend engineer, but I am taking an OS course and I am really enjoy it. I am still very junior (YOE 1.25) but I am thinking of making a job jump to a systems programming SWE position. I know Microsoft and Apple have positions obviously doing OS stuff, but any other companies I should consider? I think my preference would to be a bit higher than embedded engineering, but I wouldn't rule those out completely. I should mention I have experience (in my free time, not work experience) in C/C++/Rust/Go. I don't do any objective-C or Swift so I don't know if Apple would be an option. Thanks!

Ask HN: Bank with Yubikey support?

Ask HN: Bank with Yubikey support? 17 by jez | 6 comments on Hacker News. Yesterday I got an SMS 2FA text from my bank for a login attempt that I did not trigger. I changed my password, alerted my bank, and have been checking my account balance every few minutes it seems, but luckily everything seems fine. The experience got me thinking, because the SMS 2FA was seemingly the last defense saving my account from a breach. My bank doesn't offer a stronger form of 2FA—neither TOTP nor any form of U2F. Meanwhile, I really love Yubikeys; I have one plugged into every laptop I own (work and personal). I use Touch ID or Face ID on sites I access frequently from mobile. It seems that the one place where U2F would be really impactful is online banking, but I've struggled figuring out which banks support strong 2FA without first creating an account with the bank. Does your bank offer U2F, FIDO2, WebAuthn or any other form of hardware security token mechanism for logins? Have you had othe...

Ask HN: What Happened to Pinboard (April '22 edition)?

There have been threads like this before (last one in 1.5 months ago: https://ift.tt/mK9pB3g), but I'm not really sure what to do. I've emailed Maciej on 4/13/21, 12/11/21, and 4 times in the past month (a more urgent issue) with no response. Full-text search is regularly broken, archiving doesn't work sometimes, and most recently my >5yr archiving account was disabled on 4/1 with no warning or ability to re-up, so as far as I know I've lost archived bookmarks from up to a decade ago (don't remember when I turned on the service). It doesn't look like When I tried to re-up my archiving account, I selected 10 years, but was charged for 1 year (without the 10 yr discount, of course) instead. I really have enjoyed using Pinboard, and have been since at least 2011 (when the entry was created in 1pw), but this is a bummer and I'm not sure what to do. I really respect Maciej and wish him the best, and would love to keep using Pinboard. Comments URL: https://news...

Show HN: Linen – Make your Slack community Google-searchable

Hi HN! Kam here. I’m the founder of Linen.dev https://linen.dev , a website that makes your public Slack community Google searchable. Linen will sync your Slack threads and make it SEO friendly so your community can find Slack content that was previously hidden. Previously I worked on a popular open source project which had a sizable Slack community. Slack was great for engaging with community members and with early sales. However as community scales Slack becomes this black hole where context becomes lost. Most public communities can’t afford to pay for several hundred/thousand members so they are limited to 10,000 free messages. You run into the problem of people asking repeat questions and not searching in Slack. It also doesn’t help that the Slack UX encourages posting and not searching. We experimented with Github discussions and Discourse but didn’t want another channel to maintain and split the community on. With Linen I wanted to build a tool that is very low maintenance withou...

Ask HN: What would you use for a Python REST API in 2022? 2 by oblio | 1 comments on Hacker News. I've heard a lot of good things about django-rest-framework. However: 1. I've used SQLAlchemy in the past and I liked it, and I'm not sure how well it works with Django or if the Django ORM is as powerful. Though at the end of the day I just want a simple mapper and SQL query builder, not necessarily the super high level DSL. 2. How useful is the rest of Django when only the REST API parts are needed? Is it easy to disable the unneeded parts? Is it easy to completely remove them from the distribution (primarily for security concerns) What would you recommend for an average Python dev team? Some of the requirements: 1. authentication/authorization with support for IdPs. 2. paging. 3. built-in security features preventing various injections and web attacks. I know about Flask but it seems like a more barebones solution that has a longer ramp-up time, in order to find the right l...

Ask HN: Should computer science degrees be separated from software engineering?

Ask HN: Should computer science degrees be separated from software engineering? 4 by khaled_ismaeel | 2 comments on Hacker News. There are schools/colleges that offer degrees in crafts (for example, car repair) which are clearly separated from academic degrees in the same field (mechanics engineering, in this case). This is not the case in software engineering: you have to graduate with an academic degree in order to work as a software engineer. Do you think it is a good idea to create separate degree programs for teaching the "craft" of software engineering with a reduced dose of academia?

[$] Handling messy pull-request diffstats [$] Handling messy pull-request diffstats

Subsystem maintainers routinely use git request-pull as part of the process of sending work upstream. Normally, the result includes a list of commits included in the request and a nice diffstat that shows which files will be touched and how much of each will be changed; examples abound on the kernel mailing lists. Occasionally, though, a repository with a relatively complicated development history will yield a massive diffstat containing a great deal of unrelated work. The result looks ugly and obscures what the pull request is actually doing. This document describes what is happening and how to fix things up; it is derived from The Wisdom of Linus Torvalds, which has been posted numerous times over the years ( example 1 , example 2 ). from LWN.net https://ift.tt/xKjB7Cq via IFTTT

Ask HN: What is going on with Spotify for Mac?

Ask HN: What is going on with Spotify for Mac? 2 by ciguy | 0 comments on Hacker News. Is there some deep trouble going on at Spotify that's preventing them from releasing useable software? Spotify on my MacBook has recently become so unstable that I am going to have to remove it permanently. It constantly messes with my audio settings so that Zoom and all other apps stop working when it's running. My Airpods randomly disconnect whenever Spotify is running and I have to restart to stabilize them again. Every time I restart my computer Spotify hangs and has to be force killed. I have a relatively recent MacBook pro (But not M1) and standard setup, nothing crazy. This is getting to the point where I am going to cancel my subscription with them but I wanted to see if other people are having similar issues or it's just me? Edit: I have tried all the standard things to troubleshoot, reinstalled it, reinstalled audio drivers and reset things etc... Nothing helps.

Ask HN: How should the cost of maintaining new software features be forecast?

Ask HN: How should the cost of maintaining new software features be forecast? 6 by cwkoss | 2 comments on Hacker News. I PM for a software engineering team. Estimating the cost of implementing a new feature is a fairly squishy process, but our team has gotten reasonably good about it. i.e. How many engineer weeks will it take to go from specification to released to customers? However, I think it's an even-harder problem to try to estimate what the ongoing maintenance costs of supporting that new feature will be. - There will inevitably be some amount of bugs and/or UX issues that need to be resolved soonish after release. - Adding a new feature increases the cost of making future changes to the overall system (ex. changing a db object that is queried by 4 different endpoints will be harder than one that is only queried by 3 endpoints, also dependency management with microservices) - Having more code doing more things means that engineer spin-up and switching costs increase. We cur...

Ask HN: Is it still possible to live without a bank account?

Ask HN: Is it still possible to live without a bank account? 6 by jacquesm | 4 comments on Hacker News. In the 60's and 70's wage earners were lured to deposit their wages in bank accounts because they were 'free' and made payments more convenient. It also reduced the chances of theft from the payroll and in general seemed like a great idea. Fastforward 60 years: it seems to me as though it has gotten to the point that operating without a bank account is neigh-on impossible, especially for businesses. Which has - predictably - led to one rate increase after another, especially with interest rates near zero banks need other sources of income or they won't be able to make their 'quarterly earnings targets', which are apparently somehow set in stone and shall be satisfied come what may. So, I'm wondering: is it still possible as a private individual to operate without a bank account? What about doing so as a business? Is anybody here doing this?

Ask HN: Which email app can be trusted with my data? 11 by behnamoh | 11 comments on Hacker News. I'm looking for an email app on desktop and mobile because the Gmail website experience sucks. There are lots of apps out there, mostly priced. But I'm worried that my data (including email texts, attachments, contacts, calendar, etc.) will be saved on third-party servers, and I already have to grapple with that issue on Gmail. Are there any email apps that can be trusted with our data, even if they're not free?

Ask HN: A Dumb Database?

Ask HN: A Dumb Database? 5 by kashnote | 2 comments on Hacker News. I have two scenarios where I want to store certain values outside of my main database and I'm looking for a SaaS solution. 1: When a user joins my website, I want to show them a Welcome popup. Once they see this popup, I want to mark has_seen_welcome_popup to true. Next time they log in, I'll know not to show it to them. This is just one example. I may want to have a dozen of these sort of values defined per user. 2: Let's say I have a banner on the landing page that says "40% off" and I want to change that to "30% off." Instead of making a code change, I want to make this change in some sort of UI in the SaaS and have it update automatically. --- Basically just need a place to store little things that I don't really want to store in the main database. And some nice UI where I can toggle those values as an admin without touching the prod DB. My initial thought is to use Airtable but...

If you're on a non-mobile device, this link: https://ift.tt/2sw8MYf will open in mobile format. But getting the user agent is trivial, and so wiki should be able to easily redirect to this on a non-mobile device: https://ift.tt/TLHjFMd But they don't, and since they're one of the most-visited sites in the world, I assume there's some really good reason why they don't bother. Anybody know why that might be? Is there some sort of esoteric security thing that sites have to worry about? Do they just not want to have to do the work of serving one page and then immediately switching to the other? Or is it something else entirely?

Ask HN: Switching from Java Back end dev to systems programming dev? 4 by 3a2d29 | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello all, Curious how hard it is to move from a generic web backend engineering job to a systems programming job. I am currently a junior with 1.5 YOE. I took a few cs classes in C++ and have messed around on GitHub with C and Rust. I enjoyed the extra challenge of memory management and thinking more of performance / memory safety. While I want to try and program an emulator or some sort of systems project (recommendations welcome / textbooks to read welcome) before I definitely decide to move into that area, I was curious how hard it is. I’m sure companies aren’t thrilled to hire juniors with no systems or embedded experience. Would it be better to move to a company with low-level programming teams as a Java dev and then transfer to those teams? (Current employer does basically no low level work anywhere on any team)

How does Apple achieve both secrecy and quality for a release?

I know there are several counterexamples, but in general I'm impressed that Apple manages to keep new products/features under wraps until a major event, and then the product is in stores a couple weeks later with pretty high quality (user experience, reliability, minimal major bugs, etc.) Can anyone who has first-hand knowledge shed some light on how this is achieved with what I assume is quite limited user testing to contain leaks. Even working on products with multiple public betas and customer feedback sessions, it's hard to hit a high quality bar with a product release. MacBooks seems to be the only viable option these days 3 by open1414 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I've used ThinkPads all the way from the IBM days and those good old solid Dell computers too. Recently, I decided it was time for an update. I use Linux on the often so it was important for me to purchase a laptop that was compatible. I bought 2 laptops, all of which I had to return in the last 2 months. 1. Dell XPS: I spent over 20+ hours with their support going back and forth. I also had a tech come to my house to replace my motherboard before I gave up and demanded a return 2. Lenovo Carbon X1: The laptop came with a faulty keyboard so I just returned it because I didn't want to wait 30 days for a mail-in repair or drive 2 hours to go to a "local" repair shop. They also made me order the laptop 3 times because their system kept cancelling it for whatever reason so it took an insane amount of time to just purchase the laptop (I spent ~6 hours to just purchase the lap...

I have no idea what to do with my life

I have no idea what to do with my life 17 by alirsgp | 22 comments on Hacker News. Some background: I'm 25, finished my undergrad 2 years ago. I went to work for a FANG straight out of college, and also was working on some social networking apps on the side that I started in college. At some point my apps covered my living expenses and I decided to quit my job because I felt like it was sucking away my youth. I make enough money every month to pay my bills, and I have a decent amount of savings. I wake up everyday and want to work on something fulfilling, but don't know where to start. I feel like I have no more purpose in life and am not sure how to spend my time. I know this is a ridiculous first world problem, but it bothers me a lot. I tried studying math, buying drones, microscopes, and lots of other side hobbies but I need something to wake up to in the morning that keeps me hungry. I feel like I'm dying slowly and am not sure what to do.

Ask HN: How do I get over my obsession with operating systems? 5 by behnamoh | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm not officially a programmer, although I code a lot. And despite the impression people get from me, my college degree is not in CS. One of my tech obsessions in the past few years has been reading about operating systems, their differences, their history, and the decisions they made along the way. Sometimes it's a sad story (like when I read what happened to Solaris and BeOS), and sometimes it gives me joy (like seeing how Linux distros are getting more stable and consumption-ready for end-users). On that note, sometimes I ask myself how the world would be different if UNIX had won instead of Windows, and then I remember that I actually don't hate the Windows kernel as it's honestly a rock solid design. Still though, I think a lot about OS's and sometimes get sad that Unix (as it was meant to be) didn't get into consumer's hands. OS X and Linux are o...

Ask HN: Does anyone understand anything from academic presentations? 2 by ducktective | 2 comments on Hacker News. I'm talking about 30-45minutes post-graduate level seminars in which PhD students or professors talk about their thesis or paper. I've always tried to enthusiastically "sit through" such sessions but unless the field is really really close to my own, I don't understand anything. Like their whole literature or notations feels alien language to me. In one of such cases, I wanted to know about "differentiable programming languages" which was posted here recently. I watched this seminar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1-YOWa0vJU) but I didn't understand anything and lost all my confidence in what I knew. (Note that I searched the presenter, he is very much respected in his field. I just provided that clip as an example. It's not just this, as I said, I feel the same in 90% of similar topics)

Ask HN: Career paths when you've been disillusioned by the software dev process? 3 by Trasmatta | 4 comments on Hacker News. I have suffered from mild to moderate depression most of my life, but I'm doing my best to take care of the basics there, and I'm seeing a therapist. I'm beginning to see some of the classic signs of burnout, but I don't think this is strictly a burnout question. I work well on teams, my teammates like me, but I've always preferred solo work. I think this is a stable personality trait, as I remember feeling like this as early as kindergarten. [$] Rustaceans at the border [$] Rustaceans at the border

Support for developing in the Rust language is headed toward the kernel , though just when it will land in the mainline is yet to be determined. The Rust patches are progressing, though, and beginning to attract attention from beyond the kernel community. When two languages — and two different development communities — come together, the result can be a sort of cultural clash. Some early signs of that are appearing with regard to Rust in the kernel; if the resulting impedance mismatches can be worked out, the result could be a better development environment for everybody involved. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/7dS8qvX via IFTTT

Research Request: Self-Reproducing Systems

Research Request: Self-Reproducing Systems 4 by daly | 0 comments on Hacker News. In order to colonize Mars it seems that a system that could (a) reproduce itself a few times and then (b) seek and collect needed raw materials for those systems which would repeat the cycle. The result is exponential growth. SpaceX and Axiom may get us to Mars but they can't terraform (mars-aform?) a planet with material only shipped from Earth. I've been doing research in self-reproducing systems for a while now. In particular, I've been working with a robot and a 3D printer. This raises many thought experiments, such as how to create a servo motor. The point of the research is to highlight "interesting issues" and uncover interesting facts. For example, a Bridgeport is the only machine that can make all of its own parts (so far). Many interesting ideas arise. For example, certain plants can extract useful elements. [$] trusted_for() bounces off the merge window [$] trusted_for() bounces off the merge window

When last we looked in on the proposed trusted_for() system call, which would allow user-space interpreters and other tools to ask the kernel whether a file is "trusted" for execution, it looked like it was on-track for the mainline. That was back in October 2020; the patch has been updated multiple times since then, made its way into linux-next, and a pull request was made by Mickaël Salaün for the 5.18 merge window. But it seems that there will be more to the story of getting this functionality into the kernel, as Linus Torvalds declined to pull trusted_for() , at least partly because he did not like the name, but there were other reasons as well. While he is not opposed to the functionality it would provide, he also had strong feelings that a new system call was not the right approach. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/wkVt4iH via IFTTT
