Ask HN: What are you switching to from G Suite legacy free tier?

Ask HN: What are you switching to from G Suite legacy free tier? 7 by parski | 4 comments on Hacker News. Google Apps Engine, later G Suite, later Google Workspace, used to have a free tier where you could have a custom domain connected to Google hosted services such as email, drive, calendar, etc, for free. Google have nudged us for years, prompting an upgrade to one of their paid tiers but now they are sunsetting the free tier for good. My question is: what are you switching to, what does it cost and how many users do you have? I'm looking at ProtonMail, Tutanota, Outlook, iCloud and just staying at Google. We have to switch or pay within a month so I'm curious to see if you've landed on anything and if so, why.

Ask HN: Is a new router worth it?

Ask HN: Is a new router worth it? 12 by gwbas1c | 12 comments on Hacker News. I have an Apple Airport Express router that I bought in 2015. It works great, but no longer receives security updates. I'm mostly afraid that some unpatched bug will leave my home network vulnerable; or that I'll wake up one day and find that my router turned into a paperweight because of an unpatched vulnerability. Better reception would be nice, but, except for one problem spot, I have great reception throughout my home. Thoughts? Should I replace my router just because it's old and unsupported?

Ask HN: How do you find peers in your field who care about their craft?

Ask HN: How do you find peers in your field who care about their craft? 10 by natpalmer1776 | 3 comments on Hacker News. I am asking specifically from the Software Engineering / Development field fo work, but it can likely be applied to a great many other fields. I would like to know how others go about finding peers to discuss the more abstract or theoretical aspects of their craft/trade/field to a degree that a "9-to-5er" would typically just not care about. In my work life I find it difficult to engage others in discussions about computer science theories, or even obtain advice about perceived best practices. Those who have the knowledge and experience seem too burnt out with the industry to care, and those without are usually in the industry for the status & pay. So how / where do you find people who care?

Ask HN: How to land a SE Manager position without formal experience?

Ask HN: How to land a SE Manager position without formal experience? 3 by recvonline | 3 comments on Hacker News. I am a software engineer with 12+ years experience! I am freelancing for the past 4-5 years and now looking, for several reasons, for a permanent position again! I basically stopped fulltime coding in my projects as a freelancer and mentored, advised and setup processes! Now I am applying for Software Engineering Manager positions, but with no success. 8/10 companies don’t even answer and 2/10 told me after 4 rounds of interviews that they chose the candidate with more experience! I feel like I am “done” with fulltime hands on coding but it seems companies want you to go through their internal career ladder to become a manager! What are recommendations here? If you are a company, I am looking ;)

And what does scene construction, story arc and so on mean when you can do anything ?

Ask HN: Ways to gamify development? (make it more interesting)

Ask HN: Ways to gamify development? (make it more interesting) 2 by ge96 | 2 comments on Hacker News. The context is single technical founder, no money. So it's just a mountain of work I'm slowly chipping away at. I'm not even sure if when we get our customers if it will be fun then. I will admit I'm not 100% into what I'm making but I got into this situation where I'm a founder in this thing/have a partnership. Still I just have so much work to do. It is hard to stay consistent. I'm trying to find ways to keep me engaged. I'm doing stuff like small checklists so I feel good like I got things done. Another idea is to keep a status/errors page to see things happening/usage that might help me get more drive to make it good/see the numbers. The plus side is I have complete control of the tech and it has various domains that I can work in. Anyway I have a few more months before something has to happen (we make money or I leave). Edit: there is pay, but I ma...

Ask HN: How to Combat Propaganda?

Ask HN: How to Combat Propaganda? 5 by baxtr | 5 comments on Hacker News. Fellow HN reader. I recently talked to a Russian friend living in the West who is married to a Ukrainian. My friend told me he couldn't talk to his relatives back home anymore. He is sending them videos and images from the war in Ukraine, and nothing won't change their minds and conviction that Ukraine needs to be liberated from the Nazis. Now I wonder: Is there any clever way to combat Propaganda in such a situation? How can you establish at least doubt in the other person's mind?

Ask HN: How does Levels handle so much negative PR for NomadList? 2 by buf | 2 comments on Hacker News. Recently, I've stepped out of the shadow of being a W2 employee into being a one-man entrepreneur like Pieter Levels. He runs super popular remotelist and remoteok. At first I thought he just made a great product and that was it, but at closer inspection, I'm having doubts. 1. Earlier today, a reddit thread on the digitalnomad subreddit completely bashed nomadlist. Hundreds of upvotes saying nomadlist wasn't worth it, with dozens of comments agreeing. Only one person raised defense for it. 2. When looking at the nomadlist product itself, it's kind of ...rough. Not that I care about that sort of thing, but it's riddled with bugs, design flaws, etc. 3. He publishes his refund rate, which is just above 10%. This seems really high. Is this a case to where he got lucky and owned the digital nomand / remote work market early enough that the product actually doesn't...

Ask HN: How are you solving internal integration?

Ask HN: How are you solving internal integration? 2 by martypitt | 0 comments on Hacker News. Between microservices / lambdas / databases and streaming topics, there's a huge number of internal data sources we're stitching together. OpenAPI etc help, but there's a discovery phase of tracking down the right sources, and building out the integration, which can be labor intensive, and repetitive as APIs gain consumers. Worse, these tools can result in tight couplings between producer & consumer that make future changes hard. Is this a problem that resonates at your orgs? How are you solving this issue?

Ask HN: How to understand theory of infantry tactics

Ask HN: How to understand theory of infantry tactics 5 by 7402 | 0 comments on Hacker News. I am neither a combat veteran, nor a military history buff, nor a wargamer. In trying to follow the news, I feel a lack of understanding of fundamentals of infantry warfare. I've found that the US Army publishes an amazing detailed manual, “Infantry Platoon and Squad Manual” ATP 3-21.8, that they (!) make freely available for download. It's more of a how-to handbook, or a set of instructions - not exactly what I'm looking for. There are many books on military history available, with titles like WWII / Vietnam /Civil War / Ancient Roman / Infantry Tactics, but they seem to be a lot of history and cataloguing of events and weapons, without as much big-picture philosophy. It seems there should be a textbook that covers fundamentals that apply largely across time, with an explanatory philosopy that covers general principles, but I haven't found it yet. (Maybe something like "In...

Ask HN: What are solid examples of well written HTML and CSS websites? 3 by epolanski | 0 comments on Hacker News. Recently I started analyzing much more the documents and stylesheets I produce as well as reading more the official CSS and HTML specs. While catering to implementers of user agents, they are generally a goldmine of solid information. I'd like also to get inspired by quality work on the web, but inspecting websites pretty much never yields anything that resembles a readable document, HTML semantics and CSS quality are generally in a disastrous state. Thus my question, can you suggest websites who's html and css can be considered of extremely high standards? I can't list many safe for MDN and wikipedia.

Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve? 47 by dondraper36 | 63 comments on Hacker News. Recently, I cannot help but notice how shy and socially awkward I might be at times, which is quite frustrating. To be fair to myself, I am not awful in social situations in that depending on the context I can be seemingly confident and calm, especially when I am among people I know and the context is familiar. When it comes to new people and places, everything changes dramatically. My voice changes, my posture changes, everything changes. I can start being awkward in all possible senses. The discomfort gets to the point where I blush and this physical state of vulnerability and self-doubt of course makes things even worse :) I understand that all of that relates to self-esteem and phychology in general therefore my question. It's common to advise hitting on the gym, which I just started doing last week. Funnily, the gym is the place where I last noticed my awkw...

Ask HN: IP cameras that do not require Internet?

Ask HN: IP cameras that do not require Internet? 3 by mcculley | 5 comments on Hacker News. I want to install some IP cameras on tugboats. While these boats have Wi-Fi on board, they do not always have a connection to the greater Internet. (They have LTE hotspots that work near the coasts.) I would like crew to be able to view the cameras from various points on the boat at all times and for land staff to be able to view the cameras when the boats have an Internet connection. It looks like the Ubiquity applications used to support these modes but the newer "Unifi Protect" lines expects to use cloud services. I realize I can cobble together something that works in both modes. I am wondering if anyone has experience with hardware/ecosystems that do not assume the cloud is omnipresent. Edit: I guess I should have made this clearer. I want the users to be able to use the same UI/app whether local or remote, assuming it will do NAT traversal in the remote case.

Ask HN: Why are there no easy-to-use highly-available open source databases? 4 by database_guy | 11 comments on Hacker News. I'm a single engineer who wants to run a database by myself, no cloud vendors involved. I don't really care about scalability to a point, I don't really care about the API to interact with the database. I just want something that I can set up on multiple machines with minimal effort and have the loss of one of those nodes not cause catastrophic failures. I want the experience of something like etcd without being limited to a few gigabytes of data in the cluster (a Terabyte or maybe a couple hundred Gigabytes as a limit would probably be fine). I've spent a lot of time looking through the various options and wrote up my thoughts on why each of them wasn't a good fit. Postgres: A great database but HA options either have far too many moving parts, require manual intervention, are proprietary, or are Fake Open Source. Seems like there's lack...

I designed all the hardware (main board, test board) and software (lib, driver, compiler, RTL cores, on-board website, simulation) myself, most of which I have recently open-sourced (https://ift.tt/XgazHAf). I've had a few potential deals fall through and now I'm thinking real hard what to do next. I've tried to raise money from YC (interviewed twice). I didn't get in because I didn't have a cofounder and they wanted me to talk to potential customers, which I've now done. I know that what I need to do is raise like $10m and hire people that can do sales, part procurement, manufacturing and more. I'm just finding it difficult to get myself to do that. TJ Maxx has been under a PBX hack for more than a month

TJ Maxx has been under a PBX hack for more than a month 2 by demonachizer | 0 comments on Hacker News. A while back my wife called their main customer service number and got a gift card scamming operation. On their site they have this number 1 833-888-0776 listed for online customer service https://ift.tt/4FTyoz8. If you call it you either get the normal TJ Maxx welcome message and number tree but sometimes you hear a message like "please wait because the number may have changed" and then either a message about a gift card or press 1 for English and then it forwards to a credit scam call center. I called some of their technical staff last night and this morning but it is still happening as of me writing this post so I figure I need to post it publicly as well to get some publicity since this is really not ok. It seems probable that someone managed to put a number in the load balancing of their system and is shunting off a subset of calls out to another call center.

Guidelines for research on the kernel community Guidelines for research on the kernel community

As part of the response to last year's UMN fiasco , Kees Cook and a group of collaborators have put together a set of guidelines for researchers who are studying how the kernel-development community (or any development community, really) works. That document has just been merged into the mainline as part of the 5.18 merge window. This document seeks to clarify what the Linux kernel community considers acceptable and non-acceptable practices when conducting such research. At the very least, such research and related activities should follow standard research ethics rules. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/a4gL2fG via IFTTT

Maybe you have some ideas/problems you don't want to tackle but want to see a solution for? Great! Maybe you'd like to share it with us :) Thanks :)

Ask HN: Thoughts on Food Deliveries 3 by throwaway413 | 9 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, random question for you as I’m assuming there are a good amount of folks here ordering food via apps. How do you feel about food being left on the floor at your front door? Does this bother you at all? Have you put a bench or something in place for orders? Do you request drivers hand you the food directly? Could you not care less? Any other food delivery based complaints you would like to share? Thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughts.

Ask HN: Do you know of freelance dev work with text-only communication? 5 by uhxvt | 4 comments on Hacker News. This may be kind of an odd question, but here I go anyway: Do you know of freelance dev work where I can communicate only through text like email/slack or similar? I really cannot talk over phone/zoom or in person. I absolutely cannot react to questions in an adequate way instantaneously, I just get complete blackouts and everything vanishes. It seems to be some mix of imposter syndrome and general anxiety. I am already getting professional help for it. I am no rockstar developer but I think I have a some decent skills. I know python, databases, micro services, docker, am starting to get experience in AWS and also have a some front-end experience. I built systems that are in use for more than five years reliably and have always been given projects from family members when I was in university. Right after university, I started to work for a startup but quit after a few months...

Ask HN: Tools to generate coverage of user documentation for code

Ask HN: Tools to generate coverage of user documentation for code 4 by tstack | 1 comments on Hacker News. Does anyone know of tools/techniques for generating a coverage report of user documentation over source code? In other words, I'd like to be able to automatically determine when there is documentation missing for an implemented feature or if there is documentation for a feature that was removed. I'm asking because I've been working on a tool for many years and it's grown large enough that I have a hard time keeping track of what all the parts do and what has and has not been documented. What I'm thinking I'd like to do is add a tag to a piece of source code (C++) and put the corresponding tag in the user docs (RST). Then, during the build, I'd like a report of untagged code, code/docs with matching tags, and code/docs with unmatched tags. I also feel like there should be at least two levels of documentation to be tracked: 1) the overall feature and 2) ...

Ask HN: Are you using actors in production? Why/Why not? 7 by lostintangent | 0 comments on Hacker News. In the realm of distributed computing, it seems like there are folks that believe very strongly in the actor pattern. However, they generally seem to be pretty niche? That said, this perspective could be entirely due to my bubble, and so I was curious to hear from folks that are using them in production, and how well they’ve worked out in practice. Or, if you’ve evaluated using them in production, but decided against it, I’d love to hear about that as well!

macOS 12.3 solves 2019 MacBook Pro 16“ overheating issue with external monitors

macOS 12.3 solves 2019 MacBook Pro 16“ overheating issue with external monitors 2 by seam_carver | 1 comments on Hacker News. For context, there’s a 231+ page thread on MacRumors of people complaining and troubleshooting the issue of excessive heat/fan noise when using specifically their 2019 16" MBP’s while plugged into external monitors of certain resolutions/frame rates, even at idle with nothing running. The root cause was a bad GPU driver. Throughout the years, people have tried various workarounds, like using the laptop in clamshell mode, force enabling HiDPI mode for the monitor, using Monterey's Low Power Mode. (Some solutions of which I discovered myself.) But now, this issue is fixed by Monday's macOS update, no workaround needed! People have been celebrating in the aforementioned MacRumors thread. In Big Sur and earlier, idle GPU usage was ~18W. This is insane power draw at idle. In earlier version of Monterey, ~14W. Using low power mode, ~6W, but this required...

Ask HN: What do you use as your go-to source of world news? 2 by tunnuz | 1 comments on Hacker News. I used to "trust" Google News to give me a reasonable picture of the state of the world, perhaps even with some bias towards things I'm interested in, but now I find it very difficult to navigate. Choosing a region biases the news loads, and I can't choose Europe as a region. I would like something which is as broad as possible, and reports on the important stuff. Nowadays I tend to use the Guardian because I'm fairly progressive-leaning and it seems good enough in terms of quality, and it's also free (I really don't want to have to pay for another subscription, but I understand that beggars can't be choosers). Is there anything else I should check out? With the recent invasion of Ukraine, I have relied more and more on Twitter, but I really struggle to get the signal out of the noise, it's just not proper journalism. What I noticed, however, is th...

You can send code, and it gets syntax highlighted (you can change the theme). You can ping people like so: @user and it sends them a \a, which should play an audible sound if the terminal allows it. There's inbuilt games and rainbow names and a lot of other small things I don't remember right now. You might find the auth system interesting: it's based on a hash of ssh pubkey (bans use that and a hash of IP, so it isn't so easy to get around a ban) Also an interesting issue: bots that go around trying to brute force ssh into random IPs with common usernames. My current solution is banning if rapid successive joins are detected. Ask HN: Neutral DNS servers?

Hi HN - Here’s a question that I hope will generate some useful comments, suggestions and links. Background for question: I normally run an internal DNS resolver with an upstream pool of 10-15 providers. These are normally a mix of Global Anycast servers (Quad9 etc) with some OpenNIC, YandexDNS etc thrown in towards the end to cover the ‘chilling effects’ blackholes. Currently Yandex DNS is pinging a timeout (either due to black-holing or DDOS’ing depending on where I connect To/From). My question to HN is this – Given my ‘Information Wants To Be Free’ viewpoint, are there any DNS equivalents of Switzerland (WWII, Neutral to all parties) providers? Ask HN: Will accepting a systems engineer job make it harder to get a SWE one? 2 by propsyseng | 0 comments on Hacker News. I'm a new grad (this spring) from a state school majoring in CS. I love software development, and although I only started in college, it's what I want to do in my career. However before then I wanted to be a 'sysadmin' and did a lot of Linux/DB/cloud stuff (starting with game servers and forums) so I have a good amount of experience in I guess what would be called "systems engineering." Hence why I was given a good offer at a proprietary trading firm doing just that. But I'm worried that I won't feel fulfilled or I'll have my professional growth stunted by accepting the position, and that recruiters/peers will see me as 'just' a systems engineer; even when I have a CS degree and will likely be writing code (just more along the lines of automation/scripts/some APIs) every day. Ask HN: Has Google Books restricted in-book search?

Ask HN: Has Google Books restricted in-book search? 2 by gxqoz | 1 comments on Hacker News. I do a lot of searching of Google Books. I've noticed that in the last month or so, I'm seeing a lot more inside-the-book searches that give me a "no preview available for this page." I even seen this when searching for terms that are literally on the page I'm previewing. They show up in my results list but still have "no preview available" and no page number. Is this some policy change? A bug? I can't find any announcements about this. It definitely makes Google Books far less functional for me. Of course, I'd love to live in a world where Google doesn't have this ridiculous pseudo-monopoly on book search. But this is not the world we live in.

Platform for stateful frame-by-frame processing

Platform for stateful frame-by-frame processing 2 by robotarchitect | 0 comments on Hacker News. Hello everyone. I'm looking for a platform to do stateful frame-by-frame(sequential) processing of data. Modern stream processing engines tend to focus on parallel processing of big data. This is great when the desired results are calculated from aggregates over the entire set or subset(filtered) of the whole dataset. In contrast to this I need to process data sequentially, where a change from one row to the next has meaning and changes what has to be done next. All data is time-series data. As an example, imagine a video game generating the results according to the current situation and the inputs of the player. Spark kind of allows this with e.g. mapGroupsWithState(), but I believe it's not what it's designed for, as this case doesn't need distributing data across a cluster to do processing on(because as data needs to be processed sequentially,it should benefit from holdi...

Ask HN: Video chat apps that don't mute crosstalk

Ask HN: Video chat apps that don't mute crosstalk 3 by hammock | 0 comments on Hacker News. One of my biggest pet peeves/downsides of video chat is that they (by necessity) mute all other lines when someone is talking, to prevent feedback. If everyone is wearing headphones rather than listening via speakerphone/computer, it's not longer necessary to do that. When crosstalk is muted, it removes a huge interpersonal dynamic in natural conversation. If I can convince my team to use e.g. airpods for all video calls, I'd like to find a video service where we can talk over each other as well. Do you know of any?

Carieer path advice: .NET vs. iOS

Carieer path advice: .NET vs. iOS 9 by pandas_seeker | 9 comments on Hacker News. presuming that you have on the table two offers: one for fullstack .net (C# + angular, react or blazor) and one for ios developer. the interesting part is that both are almost identical (salary, office, benefits etc.) an advice will be very welcome - what will you choose and why? p.s. my background is mostly backend in golang (so the technology switch should be done anyway). and yes - I googled it but decided to ask here so that search engines bubble filters can be excluded.. p.s.s. I'm fine with both ones (maybe a little more inclined to choose ios). But interested also in your opinion about eventual perspective (looking into the future) related to chosen path.

Ask HN: Why aren’t there more third party retina screens?

Ask HN: Why aren’t there more third party retina screens? 11 by fideloper | 7 comments on Hacker News. Retina screens have been around for something like 8 years, but there’s seemingly only one non-Apple retina screen that exists. Is there a technical reason for this? Or is it logistical? Surely there’s demand for it, not everyone is buying screens for gaming.

Ask HN: How do you securely self-host a server?

Ask HN: How do you securely self-host a server? 14 by QuikAccount | 3 comments on Hacker News. Every few weeks or so there is a post on HN pleading with people to consider self hosting their own services. As enticing as that sounds, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has no idea how to secure said services. Spinning up a server is no problem, keeping it secure on the other hand is a feat I have no idea how to accomplish.

YouTube, please help stop the war in Ukraine

YouTube, please help stop the war in Ukraine 6 by geoka9 | 0 comments on Hacker News. There are plenty of Russians on Youtube commenting under pleas posted by Ukrainians asking them to help stop the war. And there are plenty of videos taken by people on the ground in Ukraine that show what's going on. Lots of Russians actually believe that the strikes are precision and only aimed at the military targets. There's a video recorded by a woman in Mykolaiv walking among the rubble and cursing at her Russian relatives for not believing her while her city is literally under shelling. But due to the way Youtube works, the Russian users are not very likely to come across those videos. Ukrainian Youtube users are trying to interact with them by replying with links to the videos. If somebody from Youtube is reading this, I understand that you need to curb spammers who post a lot. But if you could somehow help with this effort, it might actually help change the public opinion in Russia. M...

Ask HN: Namecheap is refusing to halt a novel phishing scam. Please Help 2 by throwawaykwt01 | 1 comments on Hacker News. There is a relatively cleaver phishing scam that's active right now where the site only shows the phishing scam when it's visited by a smart phone. Visiting it from a regular desktop browser redirects to some other service. (can still be seen using dev tools) A cursory investigation showed that Namecheap is providing both registrar and hosting services for this phishing site. I reported the offending site to namecheap but they have refused to act, likely because they haven't been able to trigger the scam. What should I do? How do I get the attention of the security team at namecheap? Since this is a throwaway account, I'm afraid I might trigger some spam protection if I share this url in the OP. I'll share it in the comments once this post gets some engagement. IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE DO. I only managed to stop one of my family members from falli...

The Collabora blog looks at recent developments in the PipeWire media system and looks forward to what is yet to come: Now in 2022, we are looking to the future. We already have designs to improve WirePlumber and experiment with new things. On the short-term horizon, we have plans to rework some parts of WirePlumber in order to make its configuration more user-friendly and the scripts easier to work with. We are also planning to revisit the policy logic and try to go a step beyond what PulseAudio has ever offered. In addition, we are looking forward to experimenting with complex cameras to improve how PipeWire and libcamera work together for an optimal user experience. from LWN.net https://ift.tt/LUViwKa via IFTTT
