Ask HN: How do you use email aliases?

Ask HN: How do you use email aliases? 3 by Blip-A | 3 comments on Hacker News. For those of you that use a custom domain name for your email address, how (if at all) do you make use of email aliases? I've seen many people recommend to use a unique alias for each account (e.g. github@myname.com, reddit@myname.com, etc.) in order to mitigate spam, but I'm wondering if this is more trouble than it's worth. Are there any unexpected consequences of doing this? I would like to keep things as simple as possible. I'm considering just having one alias for personal/professional correspondence, one alias for "trusted" accounts (i.e. services that I don't think are likely to sell/leak my email address to spammers), and one alias for less trusted accounts. What do you guys use/recommend?

Ask HN: How can I help my devs solve “combinatorial test case scope creep”?

Ask HN: How can I help my devs solve “combinatorial test case scope creep”? 5 by quacked | 5 comments on Hacker News. I work in between clients and programmers; my job is essentially to decompose client requirements into design documentation to be built by developers. [1] Since I started the job, I've been running into what I'm calling "combinatorial test case scope creep". For instance: > CHALLENGE: RENDER A CUSTOM HTML SCREEN WITH THREE LABELLED BUTTONS AND AN IMAGE. > Browsers: {Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari} > Devices: {iPad 9th Gen, Google Pixel 4, iPhone XR, Macbook Pro, HP EliteBook} > Languages: {English, Spanish, French} In this case, the custom screen must render properly in 4 Browsers x 4 devices x 3 languages = 48 individual test cases. And that's ignoring all of the other possibilities (landscape/portrait, OS version, browser version, etc.) We can quickly find ourselves in 2000+ possible renderings of the screen. I, not being a developer ...

Ask HN: Help in finding (again) a StackOverflow link :)

Ask HN: Help in finding (again) a StackOverflow link :) 2 by wgromit | 0 comments on Hacker News. A bit of an odd request, but I have weird Android issue with an autolinked TextView and came a couple of months ago across a (I believe) StackOverflow discussion where that precise issue was discussed. While I am not sure there was a definitive fix, it was at least being discussed. Unfortunately, regardless of which search terms I use, I can't find it any more. The issue is when you have more than one autolinked TextView with different links, only every odd "click" will open the actual link. Every even "click" will open the previously opened URL. I click TextView A and go to example.com. Then TextView B for cern.ch, but instead it still goes to example.com. Only when I click TextView B again, it goes to the actual URL. It almost seems the StackOverflow posting disappeared or I simply don't remember what I search for :)

Ask HN: Spotify vs Apple Music?

Ask HN: Spotify vs Apple Music? 5 by _august | 5 comments on Hacker News. I thought I'd give Apple Music a try after the recent Spotify-Rogan-Young debacle. Overall, I'm finding the experience to be pretty good, however these small things are really quite annoying when coming from Spotify: * Mac Music app & iPhone App don't sync up what's currently playing. So, I can't control it from my phone while playing from my laptop. * No Liked/Loved Songs playlist that automatically adds songs I've "loved". * Loving songs should be an icon on desktop app, not a 2-click thru a drop-down. --- On the flipside, things I like: * Easily access recently played history * Seemingly better sound quality --- What are your pro / cons?

Ask HN: Programming and dyslexia

Ask HN: Programming and dyslexia 3 by erikbye | 1 comments on Hacker News. Any dyslectic programmers here? Is it an issue for you in your daily programming? Did you find learning techniques that helped when you were still teaching yourself? Fonts, colors, screen readers? I am currently teaching a teenager, it is obvious he understands principles fast and has great memory retention, but syntax is a bit of a problem. We obviously use helpful editors and IDEs in this regard, but it is still an issue.

Ask HN: Why does the Segway look so uncool?

Ask HN: Why does the Segway look so uncool? 4 by Mockapapella | 5 comments on Hacker News. I know this is a subjective thing, but I think it could spark a good discussion on UX. When someone rides a segway they tend to not look cool, despite the fact that they're actually pretty fun to ride around. Contrast this with hoverboards which are generally cooler looking than a segway while still maintaining the same basic function. There's also other modes of transportation like bikes, roller blades, vehicles, and running that are generally seen as being cooler than riding a segway. One can definitely look uncool while using these other modes of transportation, but it's easier to look uncool on a segway than it is with any of those. So I guess my question boils down to this: What design decisions are a part of the segway that make it so easy to look uncool when compared to other modes of transportation?

What is the best way to learn Python for Bioinformatics?

What is the best way to learn Python for Bioinformatics? 4 by sam537 | 2 comments on Hacker News. I am having a hard time connecting by biological knowledge with learning to collect, analyze, and especially visualize the data. I am using Biostar Handbook (using Ubuntu) to use the pipelines and clean the data. But how do I analyze and present? This is mainly for whole genome/exome/RNA sequencing.

Ask HN: Safari only rendering part of pages

Ask HN: Safari only rendering part of pages 2 by replwoacause | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm baffled and am wondering is anyone else is having this issue. I have a new MacBook Air M1 and a new MacBook Pro M1 and both exhibit this issue. Very often Safari will only render part of the page. I notice it most often when searching Google. When scrolling part way down it just cuts off and I only have 5 tabs open! These are both fresh systems running brand new installs of macOS Monterey Version 12.0.1. How is such a rudimentary function, page rendering, broken on these bad boys?

Ask HN: Getting started with Web3 ("decentralized web") development

Ask HN: Getting started with Web3 ("decentralized web") development 4 by lihaotan | 1 comments on Hacker News. I am completely new to building Web3 applications but am quite experienced with web development, wondering if there are high quality resources around these? I understand there is a lot of negative hype around this but I am trying to learn how things work. Where should I start? Resources I have found so far: https://ift.tt/NJIcOehTo - building decentralized applications on Ethereum https://moralis.io/ - Firebase for Crypto(?) https://thirdweb.com/ - Web3 apps?

Ask HN: How to know when we are out of touch for ignoring the last tech trends?

Ask HN: How to know when we are out of touch for ignoring the last tech trends? 3 by throwawaynay | 3 comments on Hacker News. I'm still really young, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm developing the mindset of an old man who just don't get new tech. I'm talking NFTs, Cryptos, Web3, Metaverse, Nocode, most social medias, actually most new hyped startups, all of that seems really uninteresting to me.(also not really related, but also stuff like fortnite or roblox, I've been gaming since I was 3yo and actually enjoy some childish games, but I just don't get the hype for those) I mean it's maybe not even a controversial opinion here, but let's take a step back for a second, how do we actually know when we finally got old and out of touch with "the future" of tech? The only 2 things that have really impressed and interested me in the last 5 years were GPT-3 and GANs. At which point does it stop being healthy skepticism and start being boomer-l...

I hate Google (and the ads-based internet)

I hate Google (and the ads-based internet) 5 by Razengan | 1 comments on Hacker News. I just want to learn about mechanical cuckoo clocks but the entire first few pages of search results are of shops selling clock parts. I search videos on YouTube and there are web ads at the top of the list before even the first actual video thumbnail. What the fuck.

Ask HN: Why do LinkedIn recruiters give so little details about their offers?

Ask HN: Why do LinkedIn recruiters give so little details about their offers? 2 by throwawaynay | 5 comments on Hacker News. It seems that +80% of linkedin recruiters want a phone call before giving you the most basic details: sector, salary range, remote... Isn't it an extremely inefficient way of hiring people? Are they attracting anyone besides crappy/desperate developers? I really don't see how it makes any sense business wise, how do they stay in business acting that way?

Ask HN: Horrible YC startup employment experience, should I speak up?

Ask HN: Horrible YC startup employment experience, should I speak up? 16 by fullstackthrwwy | 8 comments on Hacker News. Big HN fan, started working for a YC startup. It was the worst experience I ever had. The CTO was constantly checking prices of expensive watches and not even looking at the software stack for 5 month. The company was constantly hiring and firing. Should I speak up about this awful experience? What's your experience?
